Does anyone know what brand tubes were used in the original version of the MC275?

I was lucky enough to get a pair of MC75 monoblocks that for decades lay dormant in a shed after being decommissioned from a lab. I believe they came with the original factory equipped tubes. For the full story see http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=289952

Don't forget cold solder joints, they are often a culprit, especially when going to ground.

LOL, it won't let you link the site? What's up with that? Also, wasn't there someone who bricked his pre last year with some FW update?

    Best Mcintosh Tube Amps

more on balanced circuits I was thinking that the MC275 reissue (MKIII perhaps?) had a balanced circuit, with an additional inverting buffer stage for single ended input (V1 in the attached schematic). Isn't that circuit balanced in the sense of cancelling common mode noise? Or is it simply...

    Tubes in the MC275

Here are my findings regarding the input (12AX7) and voltage amplification (12AT7) tubes with my vintage MC75 monoblocks: http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showpost.php?p=5301114&postcount=1 http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showpost.php?p=4991059&postcount=7 And here's something that takes...

    McIntosh - Hints and Kinks

When working with the turret boards in classic McIntosh amplifiers, be sure to mount new parts (usually resistors) to the same specs as McIntosh engineers did. A sturdy mechanical connection of a part ensures a secure and conductive solder joint later. It's not hard to do, looks neat and is...

    Winter Project - 3 MC-40's to restore / Update?

Puzzling to say the least. Well, from the input...120VAC in, 3V dropped over the thermistor, so we can imo safely assume(!) that the transformers see a reasonable primary voltage. My estimate for the secondary voltage would be the following: The nominal voltage at the first capacitor is...

    Winter Project - 3 MC-40's to restore / Update?

Hi, I just gave your measurements a quick glance. The readings are symmetric L/R throughout, which is good. Also, they are consistent. I would start looking for the cause elsewhere: How much voltage does the CL90 drop? What is the primary voltage right at the transformer? Am I correct...

    Winter Project - 3 MC-40's to restore / Update?

Hi, Usually I would first suspect out-of-spec resistors, but since you replaced them it's likely not the cause of the deviations you're seeing. Second suspect would be the caps (leaky caps), but as you put in new ones this can likely also be excluded. I remember reading in some service manual...

Pricing for original Genalex KT88 quad

What would be a realistic price for a quad of original Genalex Gold Lion KT88 tubes? The labels on the tubes' socket are in very good condition (no wear/crumbling, thus no excessive heat I guess) and the getters are fat and shiny. The tubes are in (confirmed) working condition. Any input is...

anyone switch to solid state in the summer months?

First summer with tubes here too. I'm running chipamps on the really hot days. Currently an LM4780 in stereo configuration, Class AB iirc, dissipates very little heat due to its reasonably high efficiency. Class D amps may dissipate even less heat. Or a headphone amplifier ;-)

    MC275 Mk V tubes flicker

The blue glow is caused by electrons escaping from the anode and hitting impurities in the glass envelope of the tube. You can confirm this by moving a small magnet close to the tube and watch how the pattern changes when the movement of the electrons gets perturbed. A large change in tube...
