604C Help

I just received a Stromberg Carlson console with a 604C and N1600A dividing network. I have taken the speaker out of the console as I feel it deserves a better home/amplification. This is my first experience with a vintage Altec and I have a few questions...

1. What kind of enclosure should this big beautiful girl go into?

2. The dividing network’s input has two posts but no labels. The wires coming from the amp to the speaker were also the same color. Which post is common?

3. The speaker appears to be in immaculate shape. What do I need to check prior to putting power to it?

Cannot stress how excited I am to hear this in person and thank you in advance for the advice/help.

Using your multimeter you should measure un-impeded continuity from the black wire(woofer - ) to the screw that is common/ground. There will be some degree of measurable DCR with any other combination.

How much room ya got?

Altec H-110

Karlson K-15

JBL C34/4530

The reasonable and simple answer is a genuine Altec 612 cabinet. But, what fun is reasonable? ;)

Thank you for all the links and suggestions. I’m very excited to get this project off the ground. All I need is one more 604C and some cabinets.

I just came across a wonderful deal on a MC240 and a C20. Seems like a great fit until I come across something more unique. Thanks again everyone.

I would build a 16 to 20 cu ft infinite baffle hang a 2 inch piece of fiber glass directly behind the speaker and then cover the the rest of the enclousure with 2 " fiber glass. 3 inch would be better. You'll get light fast bass that way. I am not fond of ported speakers unless calibrated test equipment is used in an anechoic chamber to get the tuning just right. I guess if you had a spectrum analyzer and an impedance bridge you could make an educated guess using an 8 cu ft enclosure ported. But I would continue to use the blanket of fiber glass behind the speaker.
