They used to shoot those guns off at the end of the runways at Idlewild airport (renamed JFK in 1964) just before Jamaica Bay started. Otherwise the birds in the Bay would fly into the air when they heard a plane coming, possibly resulting in accidents. This became more important with the advent of jet airliners at the end of the 1950s. The jets were both louder and more subject to engine damage from inhaling birds. They stopped using the guns sometime later, early 1970s?, when the environment types complained that it was causing birds to abandon their nests. (Like a 747 passing close overhead did not?) They switched to something else that was supposed to keep the birds grounded. Ultrasonics? Not sure.

Back then, a cheap date was to stand on the mezzanine and watch people come through customs at JFK. Later they blocked that off.
