I know it takes away from being as close to original as possible, but I wouldn't have to drill through the new grills. I found these size magnets on Apex Magnets. New grills weigh 3.8lbs, pull force on these are 32.75lbs. Any thoughts?? https://www.apexmagnets.com/7-16-x-1-5-cylinders. 1 new grill is done.

Ingenious. God forbid one should take advantage of technology's forward movement to one-up original manufacture.
Revel in the fact that you'll have better than new by the time you're done with this project.

I agree - I love this idea.

I don't know how to measure the weight compared to pull force. Will these be strong enough to hold a 3.8lb grill? The 1 1/2" will give me enough to insert the magnet 1/4" or more into the cabinets themselves.

We'll have to see, I just ordered the magnets. Worse case scenario, I'll remove when I listen. But with the strength of these magnets, I don't foresee an issue.

I'm sure a number of companies use magnets today for grille attachment. Salk has a magnet under the veneer and corresponding magnets in the grille to make the box look finished even with the grilles off. Works really well.

I would not want to use Velcro on such a large piece of perf'ed metal. Too much chance of bending the grille when removed.

I might try a pair of magnets, one glued to the grille (that inner cloth lining would hide it from the front) and one glued into the cabinet. Adjust the depth of the one in the cabinet prior to gluing in place so the grille stands proud as you like it or as designed.

Looking forward to the results.

I don't think the "looseness" of the magnets will be an issue, rather exactly the opposite. You've got a 7/16" rare earth magnet 1.5" long, N48 grade. Unless I'm mistaken, that's a hell of a lot of pull in a small area. If they grab too much, I would think you run the risk of the grill getting bent as you attempt to pull them off.

*shrug* I could be wrong.

These grills are much stronger than the original ADS grills. We'll have to see how strong these magnets really are. I bought 12 of them, 6 for each side like the original plugs. I may just have to use 4. 2 up / 2down.

To secure the magnet, I'm thinking a drop of crazy glue into the hole and then inserting the magnet. That should secure it in the hole.

Mike, have you ever tried E6000? It's not a crazy glue, but a clear adhesive that is designed to bond almost anything to anything. I even bonded 6" PVC to plywood--the stuff is like a rock. Cheap enough, sold at Home Depot.

I'll check it out when I get the cabs back from Glenn. Thanks.

Hey Mike,
Just read through this after responding to your conversation message.
This will certainly look a lot cleaner than the original grills. When you have the magnets glued to the grills, attach the magnets to them that will go into the cab mount holes. When you position the grills and are happy with their position, then super glue the magnets in the cab holes.

Changed the thread title to the restoration thread. Here's pics of what they looked like when purchased.

Mike,
Would you like me to add pics of the progress I've been making on these?
Oops! You beat me to it!

Not to be a downer, but I'm using magnets on a piece of masonite with some substantial cloth that I'm betting is similar in weight. The grills won't stay in place without the little ledge that I have protruding from the bottom of the front baffle - it takes the vertical weight with the magnets hugging the grill to the baffle.
In my case, the ledge is concealed by a cloth covered grill, but the extruded grill would require more discretion.
