AU-217 recap questions

    I picked up an AU-217 that I plan to recap. Does anyone have a parts list that they used to recap theirs? I realize mine may not be exactly the same, but at least it’s a starting place. Of the parts I plan to replace, the service manual only lists two electrolytic caps, 6 fusible resistors, and two VD1212 diodes.. Also, it looks like the 4 output transistors on mine were changed at some point. From left to right while facing the front of the unit I have: 2SD424 (Toshiba), 2SB564 (Toshiba), B545A (NEC) and D188A (NEC). The last two look fairly new, the first two look like they may be original, but the service manual calls for 2SD188A and 2SB545A. Does anyone have a unit with original outputs that can confirm that the service manual is correct? I’ve seen MJ21193 and MJ21194 listed in another thread as suitable replacements, can I just buy 2 of each and reasonably expect them to be close enough in value?

    I am surprised that there are not more electrolytic caps, but if you are referring to the service manual for a list - please don't - look in the amp itself for your shopping list. DO change the fusible resistors - for ¼ or ½ watt metal film types, and the VD1212 dual diodes - change each for series pairs of 1N4148 diodes. Have you decided what capacitors to use?.... may I recommend Panasonic FC & FM. I normally use FM in all PSU/filtering locations and FC everywhere else, and maybe Nichicon FG for signal path locations. People often find taking pictures before starting helps with later component orientation/wiring queries - so, take lots of pictures.

    If those output transistors are functional, you could leave them alone and not replace them. However if any of them show any signs of problems I would replace them all - you are correct to say that 2 each of MJ21193 & MJ21194 (1 of each per channel) are the most suitable replacements.

    Good luck with it - please post your progress and results - we don't often see an AU-217 being reconditioned :thmbsp:

    Thanks for the reply, Hyperion. I took the day off and pulled all the electrolytic caps (one bipolar), the two VD1212s and the 8 fuse resistors. All of the fuse resistors had drifted higher, one of the 220 ohms (R40) read 987 ohms. I generally use Panasonic too. I also cleaned off all of the glue. I couldn't find where it was a problem in the Au-217, but why take the chance.

    Im about to do the same for a work unit with matching tuner for my tool box with some small JBLs.I can not seem to find a service manual for this anyone tell me what the value of the fuse resistors.And the location and value of that bi polar cap.Thanks.

    The bipolar is a 47uf 6.3V

    I've attached an extract from a very basic spreadsheet that I put together when recapping a friend's AU-217. Note that it excldues the 1N4148 diodes and fuse resistors, as I have a stash of those ready to go and didn't need to purchase any.

    Actually, there are two bipolar caps, C601 and C602 on the big board. Here's my list; you'll need 4 diodes to replace the two VD1212s.

    Ah yeah, fair call. I always replace 1uf 50V bipolars with a 1uf 50V film capacitor (as per all of the 1uf caps) so I never put them down on my lists. My bad! :)

    I forgot to mention, I didn't find any errors on the printed circuit boards.
