I bought a pair of Cerwin Vega AT-10 off a coworker quite a few months ago. Pretty much my first audio purchase. Not one I'm super proud of. I paid too much money for the speakers and a JVC amp and CD changer. Anyway, it was a good learning experience...

I think the woofers have been replaced and aren't original. I always see the CV woofers with the red foam and the CV logo on them. Mine are just straight black with no logo. The foam also seems to be in better shape than it should and might actually be rubber.

I finally pulled the woofers from the box to confirm what I have feared for a few months.

The woofer has no indication of being CV made, while the mid horn does.

A couple pictures are attached. Sorry for the poor quality, I was too lazy to grab my camera and plug it in to upload them. Just easier to use my blackberry.

If someone wants to give me insight into this issue, it would be appreciated.
    Thanks

I have never seen a CV speaker with that type of dustcap. I could be wrong. My 10" woofers have orange surrounds.

The AT10 CV woofers have cast aluminum frames on then, actually well bulit! I have several of them that I refoamed with grey foams and put on inverted dust caps. I am NOT a fan of the loud pink foams and CV advertisement dustcaps- I like it more subdued.
To bad you woofers got replaced- the original sound good in the AT10's. Let me know if I can help you there- PM me.

I imagine someone didn't know about refoaming and when the originals went bad they replaced the whole driver.

May or may not be all bad. How do they sound?

I like my AT-10 due to the nice adjustments they have. I can "dial in" the mid and tweeter to get the sound I prefer given the source and music selection. I seem to be able to get a great sound no matter what I am listening to. SO, if you can do that, you probably don't need to worry much unless you really really wanted original Cerwin Vega speakers.

Yep, woofers have been "swaggled" with parts express cheapies. They are not as good as the originals, IMO. Find yourself some originals, you will be pleasantly surprised. I'd PM Doug (dc270) if I were you. He is a real nice fella and he does very good work and is very reasonable.

I have the AT-10's big brother, the AT-15, and boyyyy ohhh boyyyyyyeeee! 103dB @ 1 Watt, and foundation cracking bass you can feel rip right through your chest. Well, I had to brag a bit, lol. Different tweeter in the AT-10. I think it's a metal or mylar dome. AT-10 is not as big on bass, but it's still darn good for a 10 incher.

I find they put out a little too much bass. I have them in my bookshelf so maybe the bass is being thrown forward from the port on the back?? (I have a wall to wall bookcase,so it's really the only way it works)

I'm going to email the original owner and see what the story is.

How high off the floor are they? The idea behind the rear port is to enhance the bass. If you want to lighten it up, try stuffing the port with a big chunk of closed cell foam. You can find that stuff in blocks at Lowe's in the air conditioner aisle. it's called air conditoner weather seal.

it a disgrace when somebody does know or care about the original drivers and throw in some cheap replacements. Look at EBay for a pair, email CV for the part number, they may even have some.

Fakes unfortunatly. AT-10 drivers are easy to find. The model number is ATW-10 and they have a ribbed cone with red foam. They will sound a hell of alot better with the stock drivers. Taking the stock woofers out of a pair of CVs is like taking the stock engine out of a performance car.

I just have to decide if the money would be better spent saved to eventually buy new speakers down the road. But maybe if they sound significantly better, I can hold off for a lot longer...

Doug did have some but I waited to long and they were sold when I was actually ready to buy. Any tips on where I could find more? Simple google search had poor results.
    Thanks!
