compilation albums - just shocking how HORRIBLE some sounded

I sure it isn't news to most folks that compilation albums weren't exactly known for great sound quality most of the time, which is a shame because many contain very good, hard to find songs. But this 50's R&B LP had to be one of the WORST sounding I've heard so far.

Problems:
fake stereo with the highs on the left and lows on the right with some reverb thrown in
sounded as if someone was fiddling with the tone controls and balance almost the whole time
majorly overdriven to screechy distortion in places
tape dropouts in many places
one whole song sounded like a tape where one side of the reel got too close to a magnet and the high end tapered in and out
major tape machine flutter/warble

I know this was low budget stuff here, but I wonder how many were returned to the store? Or did people not realize or care that this sounded like shit? I mean even playing it on a Crosley wouldn't have masked how AWFUL it sounded.
