Concept 16.5 - how rare is it really?

Sold mine due to a money thing at the time, still have my 11.0 and listening to it as I type. Will pick up another 16.5 again, a fine receiver.

Some more 16.5 production data to go by.

Inspired by the designer of Concept line of receivers' "fuzzy memory guesstimate" of some 1,200 model 16.5 produced, I decided to do some investigative journalism of my own, and contacted "known" 16.5 owners here at AK asking them to PM me the serial number of their receiver. Of course, serial numbers are not always consecutive, and even then, manufactured numbers will always exceed that of actual sold numbers, for all kinds of reasons.

At any rate, here are the serial numbers I have been able to collect at this point, in chronological order:

Theblackknight 100522
ReEdger 100748
Lbpete 100834
Mech986 101497
SoCal Sam 101697
Yacbweq 101789
KR7600 (1) 101842
Oldtubes 101955
Vintagestereo 102117
Non-AK (CL 12/26) 102146
Carve It 102268
Marko 102416
Njord Noatun 102678
KR7600 (2) 102725

The data suggest that production quantities may have exceeded 2,000 units.

I am still hoping to receive data from the other suspected 16.5 owners I know of - Acidmike, Bully, as well as from a post over at the Conceptaudio group at Yahoo.

If I missed you and you own a 16.5, or come across one, please send me the serial number by PM or post here, and I will update this post accordingly.

Best regards,
Hello, wanted to give you my serial number 100628 for concept 16.5 purchased from PS salesperson in 1982 in San Francisco CA down by Tower Records. I have had it all this time. I have played bass through it and it has been used in the studio for recording for obvious reasons. Regards, laura

Hi Matt, Welcome to Audiokarma! What is the serial number of the unit? Any pics? Shipping is problematic because of the literal 55-65 pounds of the receiver and packaging strong and stout enough to allow the unit to be shipped without damage from ANY normal shipping company like USPS, FedEx, and especially UPS. In any case of shipping a Concept 16.5, you might be best served by a really good double wall box, 1 to 3" polypropylene foam inserts (that sort of waxy plastic foam that swim noodles are made from that are a bit soft and pliable) rather than solid polystyrene foam sheets or corners, very well protected front knobs and faceplate, and then use UShip for a personalized door to door shipping with specific one person-one hauler shipping - this method works well with large items like speakers but also works well with packages that are heavy or fragile. This way, you can have the unit shipped with the shipper inside an enclosed trailer, van, or vehicle and its never run through shipping hub sorting machines, dropped from conveyors, or dropped from trucks by loaders or drivers.

The cost of a UShip is variable depending on distance, weight, and the particular shipper you choose and the prices you negotiate - but given that the package would be a simple box of about 30 x 20 x 14 with stout packing material, it doesn't take up a lot of space in a trailer or hauler for example and would be gravy for a shipper already hauling something in the direction of your destination, so an easy ship and dropoff - you might be surprised that the cost isn't much more than what you'd pay FedEx and a whole lot more safely, IME.

Saw more of these this past weekend at Frankenfest than one could shake a stick at...Frank must have cornered the New England market, LOL

The unit powering the 1961-vintage University speakers produced one of those "OMG!" moments, fantastic sounding stuff...

i am looking to sell. Hopefully someone in North California that we can arrange meet to avoid shipping. Photos have my name and today's date on white piece of paper to auth it is in my possession.

Your first post was removed by the moderators because you offered to sell. Please read the rules.

i have a:
16.5 cranked up to 11?.... the THX sound test?? (using a B&W sub woofer).... I broke my front windows :p what a wonderful amp serial number 102292 I cant move it, but it's been dusted recently!!
funny thing.. i was headed up to 7-11 to get coffee and there was a sign "garage sale". I slowly drove past and saw what i already had (5.5) with a huge black thing on the back of it (amp heat sinks) got it for $50.00 since it wasnt pumping out anything (both final transistors were blown) yea.. i knew what it was.. apparently they forgot

my prior go to was the 5.5 loud, clear wonderful machine serial no 11570 original pristine bagged manual and packing box (which is not so clean~~~)
talked my brother into one a 2.0 he smoked a final transistor, never been fixed gave it to me :) serial no 30956

might be interested to discuss options someday on anything but the 16.5

Picked one up local. Needs a good cleaning.

Trying to post a pic of the serial number.

100377

My last, what I would consider "large receiver" was my Yamaha cr1020.

This concept is ridiculous in size and weight.

I had one. I had some difficulty getting it repaired, and I got tired of the ordeal of moving it because of its weight.

I did sound good, though--the best of any receiver I've heard.

If you dont have the money or cant find a 16.5, the Realistic Sta-2200 is a reduced version of the 16.5
Same manufacture, same front end tuner, see pictures

I have a new to me concept 16.5 with the serial number of 100402 which appears to be the 402nd one made and it is in beautiful condition but needs a good servicing, cleaning, possible recap only because I may keep it, and a new power switch. I'm in Northern California area.

I had one for my bench receiver driving a pair of large bookshelf Infinities. It was a great receiver, the more I used it the more I liked it.
