Critters

A visitor I had Sunday, had to take the picture through the glass in two doors. It was rather hot and he/she was just trying to cool off. Preston

Not sure when hunting season opens in SoCal, but this dude dropped by around 5:15 AM this morning for some potted plan smorgasbord and ended up featuring in his own 30 second cameo:

Note he was not fazed by the hummingbird flyby, kept his head down in the plant.

My wife spotted this dude on the patio Saturday morning, curled up under a pallet that our firewood sits on. She had actually walked back and forth past him a couple times before she first saw him, but he was snoozing anyway so unlikely to have bothered her. He was not real happy with the animal control guy though, never heard so much hissing and rattling in my life. Probably around 5 years old.

Picture under the pallet is a little fuzzy, I wasn't getting any closer than needed at that point since he was snoozing and the animal control folks usually take an hour or so to get there from whatever other calls they have going. Didn't want him moseying elsewhere due to me disturbing him.

These should be about ready to leave the nest soon. We've been watching since the momma bird built the nest right by our side door. The cat used to sit and watch them through the screen door, but lost interest because he knows he can't get to them.:)

And in other Fallbrook/ north San Diego county news, this caught and released today.
Sarge, the spousal unit, came in saying, Mike, there is a big snake out in the yard, come and see,...
I get out there, and look at it, and, immediately identify it as a rattler. I look at Sarge, and she was looking a bit pale, as she was in close looking at it, and, suggesting that she just about reached out to grab it.
So, I break out a plastic tote bin, and a small plastic leaf rake, and escorted it into the bin, snapped the lid onto it, and drove it down to the Santa Margarita River bottoms (end of our street), for a release into a tangle of broken down oak limbs.

We call this one Number Eight
In the plastic tote.

Healthy specimen - looks to be a few years older than the one we just had removed. We've only had one in the yard that size, most of the time they're smaller.
