Is the file created with a CD ripped directly to 160 kbps mp3 equivilent to one ripped at 320, then converted to 160?

The Dumb Guy says "thanks".

Probably not. MP3 is lossy, so each conversion result in more data lost.

MP3 is a throwback to the times of expensive data storage and slow internet. These days FLAC or one of the other lossless ripping methods is preferential.
