Yes about half the tubes were air. After i got my 500S I was so impressed i ponied up for this 800C even though most the tubes were air.

Zenithnut: 2 inexpensive substitutions for tubes.
6AQ8.........Use 6DT8 instead. I use this tube instead in all my gear except the MPx'er in my Sansui 1000A which won't work unless it has a 6AQ8. $3-4(6DT8) vs. $18-20(6aq8)
6HR6.........use 6HA6(correction 6AH6) instead. Works well in the 400 and other units that use a 6HR6 or 6HS6. $4-5 (6AH6) vs. $45.-$50 (6hr6 ir 6HS6) ABCVACUUMTUBES.com have these NOS for the above estimated prices. 6ba6, 6be6, 6AU6 are cheap as well. Ask if you can get either Sylvania or GE RF Tubes (V1 thru V7 or so.) These tend to last the longest (personal experience) and sound decent to boot.

If the on off volume pot is the same as the one in the 500c, which I think it is, there I is a seller on that large online auction site that sells new replacements for about $125. I got one from him several months ago and it has worked great.

It better work great, for that price it should come with a remote control, new knob, service agreement , rust-proofing & free installation. I'd never pay that, but that's just my opinion.:eek::wtf:

    Larry,

    I think you mean 6AH6 instead of 6HA6 :)
