A friend of mine mentioned yesterday that it first aired on TV on 9-10-55. It ran for 20 years. I wonder if there's anything today that can match that kind of quality and longevity. :D

I think "Law and Order" also went twenty years. There are similarities. They both had excellent casts with many character actors adding to the regular lineup. They both had memorable theme songs. The writing on both shows was also very good and many times contained a message about our society and our moral obligations. A strong theme of good prevailing over evil which sometimes didn't work out.

I started watching it for the first time on MeTV and the cast is great but the stories are EXCELLENT. It's like watching a great movie each time you see a new episode. The recurring characters are familiar but they don't take over and dominate the stories. They're there to serve the stories.

The Simpsons is in its 26th year.
A local station plays original Gunsmoke radio programs on Sunday evenings. Great stuff.

I have been watching gunsmoke on tvland for about 1 year...I find my kids 14 & 12 watching when I come home from work...

CBS wanted John Wayne to play Matt Dillon. Like that was gonna happen. However, Wayne, having worked with James Arness in HONDO, recommended Arness for the part. The rest is history. Btw, Mr Wayne introduced the 1st episode of GUNSMOKE.
iMO, the 1st season episodes written and directed by Sam Peckinpah were the darkest and the best. He presented an intense and dangerous side to Dillon that was never repeated by any other director.

The first episode of Gun Smoke, the television show, was introduced by John Wayne.

Encore Western Channel airs "Gunsmoke" and "Marshall Dillon" quite a bit. It's one of the reasons I subscribed to U-Verse 300 for a year or two. I wanted the Westerns on the Encore Western Channel. Gunsmoke, Bonanza, The Big Valley, The Rifleman, Death Valley Days, Maverick, and of course, The Wild Wild West. They also showed some excellent Western movies like Ford's "Stagecoach".

When I was a Senior in College, "Maverick" was in reruns at noon on a local channel. It caught on for some reason with us. We'd all sit in the Quad and watch "Maverick" and then talk about it until we started talking about Stereos again.

Most of the old Westerns are available for viewing in their entirety on Youtube.

I grew up watching Gunsmoke and Bonanza. My Grandfather watched me a bit when my parents were away and I loved both of those shows.

I love the "Network Plug" for Gunsmoke by John Wayne that Trans posted. I've watched it a few times. Wayne is a very laid back salesman. ;) I love the plug for his young friend Jim Arness.

There is also one on Youtube where James Arness is plugging the show to Network in 1962-ish. I can't find it lately, but I know it's on there. It's a fairly long plug where he takes you behind the scenes a bit. Pretty interesting. Worth hunting for.

William Conrad played a good Matt Dillon on the radio. "Gunsmoke" was probably my Dad's all-time favorite TV show...with "Bonanza" a close second.

Another vote for Chester.

We came into a pile of dvds of the early seasons. I had never watched Gunsmoke and had no interest...until I watched it.

They will get a replay.

According to Snoopes.com ...an urban myth.

http://www.snopes.com/radiotv/tv/gunsmoke2.asp

Claim: John Wayne was initially offered the role of Marshal Matt Dillon for the television version of Gunsmoke.

Status: False.

Origins: The role of Matt Dillon was never offered to John Wayne. Wayne, like many other film actors of the time, considered television an upstart medium unworthy of his talents.

Some say Wayne did not think much of TV ...

In fact, as Warren recalled, John Wayne tried to dissuade him from accepting the job as Gunsmoke's director:
John Wayne lived near me and we met at his bar and sat around reviling television. He hated TV and I hated TV. Tiny little motion pictures. What is that? . . . We despised it.
When CBS made Warren an offer too good to refuse, Wayne still tried to talk him out of it, reportedly telling him:
Look, you bastard, don't sell out. Don't go into TV.

On the other hand :scratch2: .... James Arness claimed in an interview (later years) that Wayne talked him into accepting the role on TV.

Would you believe I have never watched a full episode of Gunsmoke?

I remember when it aired back in the 70s and it is on MeTV all the time.

Gotta remedy that.
