It was a speaker speaker day..and a small world

I headed for nearby Cambridge, Ontario this morning to buy a pair of Infinity DVC Kappas for my antique speaker enclosures to make a subwoofer ( see pics on previous Vintage thread) that Pete AKA bully had recommended. I had learned from the Infinity sales rep 2 weeks ago that Infinity was having a factory direct at Audio Source in Cambridge today.

I also loaded up those lawn sale Altec Lansing Seven's for refoaming as well. I had learned that Cambridge Speakers was just around the corner from Audio Source.

About 2 miles from home I noticed a moving sale sign so I couldn't resist the temptation. This older couple were moving into the city as the property in the country was just too much to look after. I spotted a pair of speakers there for $20.00 ...looked real nice... I swear they are mint ...almost showroom.. at least a 15" woofer ...3-way so I didn't even try to negotiate. We carried them to the car and after loading in beside the Altecs, he said where are we going to put the other two speakers ?

???????

It was then I noticed the sticker said 4 speakers for $20.00. He didn't want to trail out the other 2 in case they didn't sell. Turns out he had an Akai quad system. He had donated the receiver to a benefit rummage sale a few weaks ago. ( Guess where I picked up a quad Akai receiver a few weeks ago for a dollar). The 4 speakers are Akai SW-177 II ....excellent condition.

I got the 12" Infinity Kappas DVC subs at Audio Source for $129.00 Canadian each and an Infinity Nucleus crossover. Young guys had been lined up there since 7 a.m. ready to have installed in their trucks etc.

I had the pictures of the enclosures with me and the rep immediately said use those ported Organ speaker enclosures. I learned that the Infinity rep is speaker collector... last count he had 86 pairs of speakers...garage completely filled with them. Agreed when he saw my Altec Lansings to preserve the legacy and have them refoamed. I driving the 2 woofers with my vintage Marantz stereo from my sub out on my Pioneer Elite A/V receiver utilizing a Y connection.

I then went to Cambridge Speakers on Sheldon Ave ..to learn Cambridge Speakers is not a store but a factory that builds speakers. The quote for refoaming was $50 max each so I left them there.

Sorry to have bored the group.

Most excellent score on the Infinity Kappa Perfect's!! That is a super price.
$780 a pair for the Akai's back in 79-80. That was super competitive territory 'price-point'-wise.
Y'all are gonna scare the cats and make the neighbors angry :dunno:

whew,

very cool! Glad you made out well. Id live to see some pics of those speakers. They sound nice:eek:

How are Akai receivers for quality. I don't see many of them. My little shop around the corner has a 125 watt per unit that looks fantastic, big beefy, polished aluminum. price is a bit high at 225, but it looks cool, been there a while, so I might be able to talk them down. Of course they now have 2 of the Marantz 1150's, decisions, decisions.

VJ, I think they might be OK. I found a baby Akai receiver, 35 wpc, a year or two ago. Looked rode hard, but spiffed up nicely, and played well, too. Kinda goofy looking front, in that mid-80s way. Gave it and a whole smaller system to my folks.
I know one can't always say something is across the board, but Akai did make some of the best r2r's available, and their cassette decks were top-shelf, too.
Would the shop open 'er up so y'all could eyeball the 'guts'?
We like very large or multiple transformers and really big capacitors :D
