Lookin' For Live
The Jazz trio My son Jack plays in is currently performing at the Soggy Bottom. You may have seen them perform at a couple of SMAC meets, both were recorded by Dennis Green.Anyways if you find yourself in downtown Flint on a Tuesday night with nothing to do,check it out.BTW the burgers there are highly excellent, craft beers moderately priced. Always a few SMAC members in attendence.

I found myself in downtown Flint on a Tuesday night with nothing to do....

Sounds like the start to a bad detective novel.

This upcoming Tuesday the trio will be joined (for a set) by a nine or ten horn front line.Should be lotsa fun.

Tonights show has been cancelled due to the weather, and long distances traveled to get there.

Was hoping to make this one, but appreciate Lisa's "heads-up" email earlier.

Raincheque?

The Soggy Bottom Big Band night will be next Tuesday,7:00PM.The regular trio will be joined by a very large front line (prolly at least ten horns).Should be very fun.So if you find yourself in Flint next Tuesday night....

Hmmm.

Well let me say I love Michigan. I truly do. I even like Detroit. I was a member of the Detroit Yacht Club for a while on Belle Isle. I've been to all the Casinos, I have explored all the surrounding areas in detail, and stayed at just about every hotel in the metro area. I was just there (near the Airport) last week.

But Downtown Flint? I'm not sure that's for me. I did a lot of business on the border with Flint - in Burton and Grand Blanc, but Flint itself, I'm not sure.

As much as I personally like Detroit (and I know that makes me an oddball), I will pass on Downtown Flint. Unless in the last couple of years it has suddenly blossomed again? Let me know. I love Jazz.

Well,Like any old urban area in most major cities there are places to avoid,Flint is no exception. The area where the Soggy Bottom sits is not one of those areas.Adjacent to The U of M,Flint,Mott C.C.,and a downtown district that's on the mend,Personal safety has never been an issue for me,my wife,& my friends.

I haven't been to downtown Flint in the evenings yet but during the day the main street is a pretty happening place, or so it seems. There has been an extensive rebound in the dining and entertainment area. I have also heard from quite a few others that the night scene has really come around in the last few years. One of our own SMAC members lives not to far from there and has spoken highly of the jazz scene. The cultural center is just to the east and also has frequent musical expositions.

Scheduling is the only reason I have not checked it out myself but I do trust those who I have heard from enough to warrant seeing.

That's good news, gents. As I posted, I'm one of those oddball fans of Detroit. I like and follow the Tigers, I like and follow the Lions. I know metro Detroit extremely well, and have been there countless times on business and a little pleasure (Casinos and DTE Concerts and Ball Games). I saw a special on one of the late night TV shows featuring Detroit and how young urban professionals from other cities are buying space in downtown Detroit simply because it is so inexpensive. These people are helping revitalize the city. That's a very good thing.

What amazed me is when I'd drive from Flint to Burton and then Grand Blanc how rapidly the "scenery" would change, if you know what I mean. In a matter of a 1/2 mile it was a very different "culture".

I'm really glad Flint is rebounding. If you look at areas like Clarkston, Grand Blanc, and even Frankenmuth (I know that's a bit far north), then you really see that anything is possible.

I'll definitely check out "The Soggy Bottom" next time I am in town. For sure. I was just there last week. I wish I had known a bit sooner, I would have popped up for some music and fun.

Thanks.

Well,Tuesday nights is when it happens,7:00 pm.Trio with a different horn player sitting in every week.If for some reason the schedule changes I'll post it here.Be glad to have you join us.

I'll be there sometime this summer I'm sure. Any excuse to get to the Detroit metro area - and as long as in Flint, Frankenmuth is not too far further north. I like the coffee shop there and need a chicken dinner anyway. It's been a while.

BTW, by coincidence "A Prairie Home Companion" yesterday was from Detroit and one of the songs they sang was "Detroit, talkin' 'bout Detroit" to the tune of "My Girl" where they listed all the great things and attractions of that great city. Obviously the audience appreciated that song. Go Tigers!

:)

Thanks.

Billy

Just a reminder tomorrow night is Big Band night,The last one was a blast.I'm hopin' for more of the same. David

A recent article in our local paper has hi-lighted the recent upgrades and restoration of the Longway Planetarium. After almost 2 million dollars, it has a new dome, seats, and the first of it's kind in the country dual projectors. It's located in the Cultural Center just about a mile east of downtown.

I will be making a visit in the near future.
