Laptop to VDAC to amp?

I'm almost ready to try hooking up my old Dell Insprion 8200 laptop to the Musical Fidelity VDAC and then into my amp.Any amp with an AUX port, right?
Read here in AK somewhere about using the Tape In port because of the record/play aspect?
Whats that all about? Is it better than using the AUX in?
What port should I use going out of the laptop? to the VDAC?
I have some CD's I loaded in the laptop and I'm looking for your advice on what to expect or to avoid.

I use the exact same system like this:
USB 2.0 from netbook to V-DAC, V-DAC to multiport switchbox, switchbox to single line level input on tube preamp.

Works fine. I run iTunes on the Netbook and access my main library via my home wireless network, but I am looking at adding an old desktop as a "headless" unit like djnagle did and run the iTunes on it from my desktop. That way I can sit here and select w/o getting up.

Got it set up.I have the laptop > DAC>preamp>amp>speakers.
Results = midrange emits constant midfreq tone but otherwise works as expected.
The unwanted tone has been tracked to the laptop.I guess that could be expected too.
How to get rid of it?
I really dig the ease of operation using the laptop as a run away jukebox.
So I'd like to stick with it but what about that tone in the midrange?

Don't know about the tone at all; not an issue here.
Are you running it via USB??
