Way inside the earphone output of the Mac mini and other Mac stuff is a not well discussed optic device. It is accessible with a special fiber optic cable from the the usual auction place and culminates with a standard toslink male connector on the other end. I bought a el cheapo DAC from the bay for $16.00 and tried it out with my mini.
The DAC has a standard toslink female input along with a coax input. It also comes with a wall wart for power. All for around $16.00. There are several sellers for a similar item.
The sound is really something. I am impressed. I am playing you tube stuff and some spotify. They all sound great. I connected it across the room with a pair of RCA cables for now but plan on getting a longer (20 ft.)fiber optic toslink cable with a coupler to keep the DAC as close to the pre. as possible.

The USB out has better specs, but you're right: It's kind of a hidden feature. I use mine with a Dragonfly and it's a great combo for not a lot of money.
