Marantz 8b or Scott 299a

Marantz 8 b will just meet specs at 35 watts output. Where a Scott will be out of spec above 7KHZ and below 100 HZ at 30 watts when new. If you really want a great amp at that power level you either want a MC 240 which will meet specs at 55 watts or preferably a pair of MC 40's. And yes I know you can probably buy 6 to 10 Scotts for the price of an 8b or MC 240. The Scott fixed up is quite acceptable, but will never been excellent like the 8b or Outstanding like the 240.

Gordon, why the HF-22 as opposed to the Eicos using EL34s such as HF-35 and HF-50? The HF-22 uses 6L6GC. Not that there is anything wrong with that tube, but I would think the HF-50 would be more similar to an 8b.

And don't forget the HF87 cathode bias and HF89 which has fixed bias with EL34 power tubes. The front end is a "long tailed pair" consisting of a 12ax7 and 6sn7. Very good amps if you have not heard them
