Mr. Carlson's Super Probe

I'm working on a draft BOM that I'll post. This is my first time with SMD so I'm sure it won't be error free, but I'm sure the AK brain can correct it.

Note: this was edited 4/4/2018 to ensure resistor size is 0402.
Working my way through this. My counts might be off and I might not have everything. I just realized I'd almost forgotten the 0 ohm jumpers. Mr C says "Most of the small resistors and caps are 0402, the 0 Ohm jumpers are 1206, the larger tantalum caps (22@10V) are the same part number used in the capacitor "band end" tester." This is for the probe only. I'll work on the amp next.

I'm glad I didnt submit my order with mouser yet. twodogs after seeing your post and mentioned the resistors are 0805, I printed out the probe component schematic and then started measuring the component spacing with my caliper. The resistors seem to be 0402 and 0805. I'll have to go thru and check everything again. This is my 1st time working with smd as well.

I just remeasured the probe head lay out and I came up with, everything is at 0402 except for 3 capacitors. It looks like a 4.7uf non-polarized cap right after the 5v supply and the 2 caps 22@10v which would be 0805.
When Carlson said "tantalum caps (22@10V) are the same part number used in the capacitor "band end" tester." I'm assuming he means 22uf at 10v?

Well duh! My resistor sizes were wrong. Paul Carlson says resistors are 402, so that's what they are. I've revised the list in post 25. Here is the video that talks about the band end tester. The 22uf cap in my list is the one he recommends. Not sure about the pin configuration of the switch you found.

OK I got the ruler out and refined some of the sizes and also started on the amp. I list the package size for each part below so you guys can take pot shots at my work. I also try to select a brand that Mouser carries a lot of. Murata for small caps, Kemet for large caps, KOA/Speer for resistors. When we're done I'll make a list with just the part # and quantity so you copy/paste the BOM right into Mouser or Digikey (and probably others).

If any of you guys who made boards have any extras that I can buy, then I'll build this up and test it.

I did not know this. Can you give find a non tantalum part number? All I'm seeing are tantalum in the 22uf and 100uf values of the sizes listed.

I don't have one of those boards. (Been following the thread as a project to build.)

So I don't know how precisely much space you have on the board, but a common trick is to use an axial lead and just bend the lead to make a radial. Insulate the lead if necessary.

Space is the issue. Most of the caps are ceramic, but the 22uf cap needs to be a surface mounted device and .14 inches long. It has to fit in the hand held probe. I'll look for alternatives but not sure if there are any.

A standard electrolytic radial is roughly same width as a tantalum, but about 2.5 times as wide.

The solid-aluminum electrolytic is a bit larger, about 2.5 times in each dimension.

One more thing. The ceramic SMD capacitors should be nearly the same size. You can't find one?

Hello, were you able to get the Gerber files from somewhere, JLCPCB won’t use the pdf’s that Mr. Carlson poster on Patreon?

Thanks

The downloadable gerbers are on the instructables page that is posted earlier in the thread.

Great thanks! Are they the same size as the ones Mr. Carlson designed. I thought I remembered reading somewhere that they were upsized for slightly larger components? But I could easily be wrong. Thanks!!!

Is this list intended for populating the board of Mr. Carlsons design or the design found on the Instructables website? The boards on Instructables look like quite a different layout and I'm not too familiar with SMD components and their sizing. I believe the resistors on the Instructables boards are of a larger shell size.

Thanks
