I don't know much about linear trackers but I know I have to clean it, lube the rails, and probably should change the arm drive belt. I DID notice some annoying scratch/noise as the stylus settled into the groove on set down.
I used one for 5 years and it's a truly fine TT. With a top MC, it was only a tiny bit shy of my 'audiophile' tables with 'super' arms. An overhaul would be appropriate after 15 years but the belts may be fine; mine were still like new, and of even more dodgy provenance than yours. And IIRC, the rails should
not be lubed, only cleaned — on the other hand, the bearings in the wheels that roll on those rails probably should be cleaned and relubed. The noise on set-down could be the muting relay; mine is acting up badly — I may just bypass it and use my preamp volume control.
Once you're inside, you
should replace the tiny bulbs. They're cheap, but it's more work for sure; depends on your skills. One of my bulbs failed; it's only auto-lift-off, not a biggie, just annoying. But if one of the bulbs that guides the arm blows, it could be a nightmare, maybe destroy a cantilever... I don't know but I worry.
So I
have to do mine: I don't use it now because I don't trust the bulbs. When I do it, I'll redo the
tonearm wiring too. There are at least 5 breaks between cart and preamp; breaks, changing to PCB tracks then back to wire, lots of solder, etc. I'll replace all that with a single run. I've rewired a few arms that way, and the improvement was dramatic, a real night/day difference.
Proof: I bought a new SME 309 — I'd lusted for one of the gorgeous new SMEs, and finally had one, even the damping trough. It was like having a mad crush for years on a gorgeous woman, and then she said "Yes I'll marry you." Dream come true. I knew it would beat my Linn Ittok and it sure did.
Then I rewired the Ittok, as described above: one continuous run. It wasn't even 'super' wire: only 99.99 OFC. And now it was better than the SME. I did
not want it to be, I
loved that SME. I was so attached to the SME I
must be wrong. I called three friends to tell me I was wrong: a violist, a composer, a recording engineer, They had far better ears, and we played LPs they'd worked on and knew intimately. They all preferred the straight-wire Ittok. I wasn't happy about it, but let the SME go.
A long digression, but I did it to stress what a major change a simple rewire can make, and yours will be easy. The SME had several more breaks than the rewired Ittok and I have no doubt that, and that alone, made it the better-sounding arm. I've looked inside my LT-22, and studied the schematic — the rewire seems very easy, much easier than the Ittok, because it's all out in the open and accessible.
