I'd look around for a mk1 all wheel drive impreza. Should be fun on farm roads and pulling loads/handling trash to the dump.

is this $1000 to buy tha machine? (good luck) or $1000 for the trip...hotel, meals gas etc? if we atv up in the ANF (allegheny natl forest 22 miles away) we take the camper and live outta it, for 3 days our gas+food cost is under $100, if we head over to sproul - excuse me - whiskey springs (pussies), the extra gas plus hotel and all meals out push this to 300 - this is for ATVing. last time I really had car fun was taking the old escort GT to lime rock when we lived in CT or 'run what ya brung' with the F150 at beaver springs...but those were el cheapo

I only paid $1,400 for a 2001 Subaru Forester with a manual last December. I changed the wheels and tires but it did have newer tires on the stock wheels and had over $3,000 of work done between March and October.

Not the fastest car but it sticks to the road like glue with sticky tires and can haul a fair load. I've had much faster cars buy this is a blast to drive.

If we're talking about buying, I think for me it would be the motorcycle for $1000.

Around here you don't much excitement in a car for $1000, unless you sign up for a short rental ina Corvette or something like that. I'm not that much into ATVing but if I were I'd still need something to haul it somewhere to actually use it. A motorcycle I can find in that price and drive it without first having to haul it elsewhere. That's my story and sticking to it. :)

There wasn't a choice for me in the poll, but I went with the closest answer--motorcycle. I'm actually shopping for two fixer-upper Honda Metropolitan scooters, 2006 or later. I want a project to work on, and also have something to putt around the neighborhood in and use in our local cruise. (I figure if someone can drive a gasoline-powered beer cooler around, we can get away with scooters. :D ) Minor cosmetic issues aren't a huge deal--the tupperware to replace cracked or broken panels is still available through Honda.

Unfortunately, state law means I have to register the scooter as a motorcycle, as it exceeds 25 MPH. (We have three criteria, and > 25MPH is one of them.) So that also means we may need motorcycle endorsements on our licenses. I really don't want to have to go through a whole motorcycle training course as I absolutely do not want to ride one (you have to use their bikes to train on, not your own). My hips would be in pain straddling a motorcycle after about five minutes. There was a Metropolitan II model that was limited to 25 MPH so it could be classified under "moped" but good luck finding one. (It is the same as the Metropolitan but is modified for a max speed of 25 MPH.)

Depends where you live, and if you can ride a motorcycle. If you're already a motorcycle guy, then this is a natural choice - if not, maybe not.

If you live in a rural area and can ride the ATV whenever you want, then that's the obvious choice.

If you live in the suburbs, and want a project car, well, that makes sense.

I'm thinking about a new project truck this year, I haven't changed vehicles for a while already and it would be fun to get into a new project.

well then I expect to see you are carlisle ATN (all truck nats) this summer...

I had some extra cash laying around so I bought a Harley-Davidson Road Glide Special.
I bet that would have taken a couple dozen entries on the $1,000 poll though. ;)

I bought a Honda CB750 (1996 Nighthawk) as my first bike a few years ago for not much more than $1,000 (I paid $1,300). Rode it all across the Mid-Atlantic and Blue Ridge regions. Most fun I ever got for that cheap. Now my wife rides a BMW F650GS and I ride a Suzuki DL650, which are both also very fun, but more than $1,000.

Next bike will probably be a HD for me.

So I'll go with "motorcycle."
