Returning to photography...a question

Had a Minolta early 70's then lost interest. Now retired with new-to-me Canon digital.

Question...can someone suggest an online photography group where I can ask and learn? Things are more complex it seems. Downloaded the Canon owner manual...170 pages ! Thanks.

Brian, I have to run to work right now but a lot of things are the same as film. However don't be afraid of the camera, because it's digital. Meaning you can shoot 100s of photos and it doesn't cost a dime to learn to shoot the camera.

Look around for a digital photography course at your local community center, library, community college, etc.

I think this site is owned by Amazon, so there is an inherent philosophy of new toys and upgrading (imagine!), but the numerous forums have many experienced and knowledgeable people. There are forums for specific manufacturers and styles. Just using the search function will answer many questions you may have. They have their share of shills and fan boys, but good information is relatively easy to find.

This site:

is probably not the place for a long and comprehensive tutorial, but they have hundreds of short topics that are just the right size for easy digestion:

I highly recommend the following book for beginners
The Beginner's Photography Guide, 2nd Edition Paperback - by Chris Gatcum (Author)
DK books.

I know you're not a beginner, but I think this book will quickly show you what's the same as you already know and what's new.

Ditto - and a local camera club can be a great place to learn from friendly people.

thanks. I lived in Hammonds Plains for years.

I'm a bit late to the party on this one :)

Personally, I would grab an adapter for the DSLR and throw some old glass on to it - maybe some old Pentax lenses or M42 stuff. With the DSLR in M, all you need worry about is setting your metering and ISO - everything else you can do from the lens. I've used manual lenses virtually exclusively on my various DSLRs and it gave me a real insight into using the camera without getting lost in camera menus !
