SA-9500 Recap

You should be able to "manufacture" posts from ring terminals and 12-14 gauge Romex. Obtain the proper size ring terminals for the size of the screws of the caps. Crimp, then solder, a short (~ 3/4") piece of the stripped Romex to the terminal, and then solder your wires to the new posts. If you feel the need for the dual posts, you may need to go to 16 gauge solid copper, but maybe not with some careful pre-bending of the Romex and crimp end of the ring terminal.

solder or crimp ring terminals that fit the caps, onto the ends of the wires that formerly connected the capacitors. You can pair up wires into the terminals. Use a split ring lock washer to keep the screw tight.

Is the Dec 2011 recap BOM list in this thread still accurate??? Has anyone used this BOM and updated it to current DigiKey or Mouser part numbers?

The list in post 5 is complete at Mouser except two ECQ caps, the 0.1µF/50V and the 0.22µF/50V which are NLA and the KSA992 transistor which is backordered right now but there are 19,000 expected around the 18th of Jan. Easy to find replacements for those caps and you can have em ship the order complete and get the rest ready to go until the transistors come in.

SA-9500 and SA-9500II are NOT the same parts list.Very different internally.

The sa-9500II cap list has been done by Mattsd and KingBubba, but is not in marty's master list.
http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/index.php?threads/pioneer-recap-lists-sticky-suggestion.457663

I never finished vetting and reconciling (IF there were any differences) the two lists.

The list for the SA-9500II is very out of date and uses some caps that are not the ideal replacements (ie: UKL used where there should be UPW etc.). It also does not have any of the transistor replacements. I'll revise it and add the transistor replacements here soon.

I have an SA-9500ii that I would like to recap (and "re-trans" perhaps) while it still works. It appears the March 2011 BOM is the latest and perhaps the only one available, but is too old to be recommended?

Mike.

It's pretty up to date. Only the ecq caps from panasonic are no longer available. Just sub KL caps from Nichicon or other film capacitors(many use Kemet although they cost more than the panasonics ever did). The values are accurate.

You should start a new thread after you have inputted the BOM. You can then ask for help on what's not available (sometimes the same caps or transistor is available in a different form, like tapped vs individual).

Isn't that BOM (on the first page of the thread) for the 9500, not the 9500II?
There you go. You're looking at the wrong thread and I'm answering based on this thread. Let's stop before we confuse someone looking for a SA-9500 BOM.

Alright then, I spent the weekend doing my first recap, the SA-9500ii in question and so far it appears (or sounds) to be successful. More testing needed, but I'm encouraged by this first project.

I invested in a Hakko FX888d soldering station to replace my ancient Weller and am surprised by how much better the new iron was. Night and day. I also invested in a Hakko FR-300 desoldering station and can't imagine attempting this without it, though I still had to solder-wick the three caps on each of the power amp boards so as to keep the disassembly manageable.

So here is my cap and transistor list, as well as a BOM, which is mostly lifted from "SA-9500 II Cap & Transistor Lists" by the architect, and the Word doc "Pioneer SA9500ii.doc", with a few updates for obsoleted Panasonic caps.

Changes from previously published lists are underlined (really just Panasonic caps, replaced with film caps). Also, I'm not clear on the naming scheme (CEA, CEANL, etc.) for the film caps and so left it as "XXXX". These are, of course, Mouser part numbers for Nichicon, Kemet, Wima, and ON Semi.

Lastly, this newbie discovered that in some cases the price break for 10 units was so good that it was actually cheaper to buy 10 of an item than 4 of that item. He also discovered that some items may not be available in bulk (aka loose), but are so on a tape, which is just fine.

Matt,

Thank you for posting this list. It saved me - and others I'm sure, hours of work. It is also handy that it is easily pasted to Excel. I'm nearly finished rebuilding my SA-9500. I'm working on the input / phono board. I'm stoked.
There's an error in the service manual that made it to the posted list.
AWK-039: C9: 47uF 6.3v CEA: 647-UPW1A470MDD6 47uF 10v

The service manual lists 47uF 6V for C8 and C9, but 47uF 25V is required. It's correct in the schematic and the diagram (and in the amp). Are you able to edit posts that old?

Thanks again!

Stoked!

Adam
