Sansui XP-99 Issue

So I've been using my Sansui XP-99 for about a year now and in that time I have pretty much completely ignored the automatic tone arm function cause I just found it too slow and obnoxious. Instead I've simply steered clear of the "start/stop" button instead just lifting the arm myself and letting sensor pick up that the arm is moving to turn on the turntable motor. Up until today this has never been an issue.

Today however when I went to turn on the turntable the "start/stop" button began blinking, then after a few seconds blinking faster, while emitting a low buzzing noise. when this happens nothing is movie, it stops after a few seconds but then when I lift the tone arm to place it on the record the motor does not engage and everything is left totally still. Additionally I've noticed that after the blinking light has stopped I am also unable to change the "Speed" or "Size" settings.

Anyone have any advice on how to get the "start/stop" button to not activate upon powering on?
