"Say Hello! to my new little friend"

I ordered one and look forward to any mods you all do to it. Keep us informed. Mine is still in shipment. But only $46 total.

You got it for a good price.:thmbsp:
I got a lot of Russian PIO. and a few Teflon caps that I have accumulated
from ebay, I already have a few thoughts on trying a combination of PIO
and Teflon caps together, of coarse I will probably have to build an enclosure
and hang the larger caps from under the circuit board.
If I find an improvement that works better then stock I will definitely post
it on AK.

I was looking at caps at digikey.com and mouser.com and the panasonic electrolytic's
do have the same markings as the capacitors in my Guanzo so it does appear they
installed panasonic caps like they advertised.
Purchased some GE 5670 black plate and some Jan tubes on ebay to try out.

Over the weekend I took the Guanzo pre amp and my Sansui AU-717 up
to my friends house out in the desert where we could really crank it up
without any neighbors to get agitated, something I really did not get a chance
to do when I first got the pre amp.
Listening to this pre amp at lower volume levels is not where is does it's best
performance, when I first turned on the system my friend thought that it sounded
okay and I agreed then I turned the volume knob to about the 10:00 O'clock
position and that's when this Guanzo started to come alive, going to 12:00
O'clock position it was really getting impressive sounding and then onto 2:00
O'clock and the results were shocking, it is very clean sounding with excellent
depth and detail in the music, the bass is strong with very good transience response,
I really like the big power of the SS amp combined with the Guanzo Pre amp.
Today I got some GE 5670 WA tubes in the mail, I tested them and then tried
them out, IMO I thought the Chinese 6N3 sounded slightly better, maybe a little
smoother sounding and less harsh, I have some other tubes that will be coming
soon to try out.
I also tried the Guanzo pre amp with my Realistic SA-2001 that I use in my
bedroom during the summer months, I really liked the improved detail and
separation it gained.
At lower listening levels I prefer to use the stock pre amp that the realistic has
because I like the perfect level control or variable loudness as some amps call
it but when it comes to cranking up the volume the Guanzo will out perform the
stock Sansui or Realistic pre amp tremendously.
The good thing about the 6N3 Chinese tube it's a cheap tube to purchase new
and only time will tell how reliable it will prove itself to be, luckily pre amp's are
easy on tubes.

How do you guys think this amp might work with a stepped attenuator (10K) like the ones I see listed on Ebay?

Can anyone please tell me how many traces there are for the volume pot on the PCB of this amp?

Just a little reminder guys, the Chinese 6N3 is a Soviet engineered clone of the WE396A/5670 dual triode. That may open up some tube rolling possibilities.

Whoops, never mind. This was stated previously in the thread. I need to read more carefully.

You can add a volume attenuator for about $6. These little things look to be highly modifiable. :thmbsp:

Many Chinese tubes out perform their western counterparts. Wouldn't worry too much there.

The volume pot is a miniature circuit board surface mount
with three leads per channel. Markings on pot > A50K

Thanks Broken, am I to take it that a circuits design has a direct correlation to the resistance rating (50K in this case) of the volume control pot/stepped attenuator used? :headscrat

in most simplest terms, yes. the vol pot is part of an input impedance figure and so is a design value.

Thank you all for the posted info, I just ordered one requesting the 110
volt transformer.
I had been waiting for something like this to come out of China, simple
and without the outrages price's I have seen for tube pre amps.
Looks like it will be a fun little unit to try out and all for under $50 bucks.[/QUOTE

Which seller did you use. I see several.
Edit: Never mind. I found Snow48_6.

Big Bill, just buy the damned thing and quite worrying about numbers. Your ears have to be the judge. If it's not to your liking get a soldering gun and make it so. Trust me brother.

Big Bill almost got tubey. Then he went and bought a solid state pre amp. Don't be hard on him though. He's a good guy. Just slightly mislead. :whip:
