Sony NS999ES Eject problem

My Sony NS999ES is not ejecting the CDs properly. It will open like its going to eject start to eject then close.
Sometimes I can lift the rear of the unit and it will fully eject. The manual says to pull power cord and power off for over a minute to reboot everything. This works sometimes. I bought it used and have not contacted previous owner to see if he had a suggestion.

Any ideas?

In case it helps, there is a service manual online. My instinct would be to look for a belt that needs cleaning/replacement, though in the service book I don't see one.
