Over the years, I've found various 'cheap' DACs to vary significantly in quality. Portable CD players, MP3 players, PC sound cards, phones, tablets, etc.
As usual, it will be the ancillary components around the DAC chip that are the major cause of this; filtering, PSU, clock.
I bought a cheap Win8.1 tablet, to use as a DMC. But I recently hooked its headphone output up to my Arcam system, and was pleasantly surprised at how good it sounded.
