The official Fairchild 412 registry thread!

Dave - that's a version I don't think I've seen before. They both say "for single speed operation". What the four speed reference?

My latest acquisition - 412-1A No writing on the motor. Can anyone date this for me?

Thanks!

Probably 1958, maybe 1959.

The 412 "basic chassis" was the basis for the 33-only 412-1 and the 4-speed 412-4. The Basic Chassis became a 412-4 with the addition of the vacuum tube electronic drive unit to the bottom of the chassis, which varied the frequency of the power being fed to the Papst motor. When it was new, the 412-4 was the most expensive turntable available that I'm aware of. The price was so far above a Gararrd 301 and Rek-O-Kut B12H that I can't imagine that even the big broadcast idler drives were more expensive.

From what I've been able to find, there were probably fewer than 100-150 ED units manufactured

On Ebay

412 basic chassis, deep chassis bottom plate, pop-up adaptor. Papst motor date okt 23, 1957. Unit serial number 3?479. First digit is hard to read - looks like 0,1, or 3 depending on the pic.

Can any of you Fairchild guys help me identify what I have here? Going through the thread, I didn't see quite this chassis style and there are no serial numbers except maybe molded into the platter bottom. There are four threaded attachment points in the corners which make me wonder if it was suspended from the plinth.

I think it takes a three-point Lord grommet suspended Papst. The shaft, bearing, thrust bearing and ball are all in good shape and I hope to put it all together at some point.

Thanks,

Doug

It's a Fairchild 440 chassis and platter.

So happy this eve..got this Fairchild at estate sale with the Wharfedale Speakers..serial number 2713.
Just thought I would share with the group. Such a quiet motor..all I had to do was re-attach the belt that had come off. This will never be sold by me..

Congrats. Nice arm as well. Have both in my collection. The Fairchild has a SME 3009 arm and the Grado is on a Thorens TD-111. BTW - that table has two belts but I guess you already knew that.

Thanks! I did not realize this has two belts, I only saw the one which had been disconnected, and it seems to be working great now, so hopefully the other one is ok. Also didn’t realize the tonearm was also on Thorens models. This has to be the oldest turntable I have..I have a few of them..and the Acoustic Research AR-XA is my oldest one. Do you happen to know based on my table and serial number approx what year this one is?

I missed your post. If you have the Papst motor, there should be a production date for the motor stamped on the side. Figure with shipping over from Germany, your table was probably built in a 6-ish month range after that date. Considering the other units I've seen, yours was probably made in the first half of 1958.

Spotted on eBay:
412 basic chassis, ink-stamped dataplate, S/N 413. Louvered baseplate installed.

Thanks so much! I have not been logged in much lately but just happened to do so today. I’ll double check that motor as well..

A couple more entries from eBay:

412-1A? (data plate not visible). Shallow chassis, Papst motor dated Mar(?) 1957.

412 Basic Chassis, black data plate, deep chassis with bottom plate, S/N 1373, motor dated 18 Oct. 1957

412 Basic Chassis, ink-stamped data, deep chassis with bottom plate, S/N 714, motor date not visible except for "57."

Recent eBay sighting from Honolulu:
412-1A
S/N 5172
Shallow chassis
Papst motor, date not visible.

Either Fairchild stockpiled a bunch of motors early on, and switched when the supply ran out, or they built the vast majority of the 412s in a short period and shipped them as orders came in over the next six to eight years.
