TPA 3116 vs the tripaths

Schiit has a low cost phono preamp that is pretty good. I believe Emotiva does as well.

Sorry to hear about your dad, I hope you have lots of good memories.

Don't have a ton, but what I do are good. Didn't know until he was gone how much my mom interfered with our relationship. Kind of wish she went first...

Finally put my Icepower 50asx2 board into action yesterday morning.
Ghent cable and case kit.
Initially I was underwhelmed.
Poor dynamics with a flat soundstage and horrible tonality.
But over the course of the last 14 hrs or so things improved dramatically.
I'm pretty pleased and really impressed with the great depth of the soundstage.

The 50asx2 is being fed by an Oppo bdp105 and driving a pair of Altec 604-8G's.
At one point a tube preamp was inserted between the Oppo and the 50asx2 in an attempt to improve the tone and soundstage but it didn't help and was taken out.

There is also a 3250D2EVM board waiting patiently here for a power supply to arrive.

Can't wait.

Hi New Friends,

I'm fairly new to this DIY AMP/DAC/PreAMP scene but have been designing and building various speakers and subs for a while now with great success. So I fell down the rabbit hole one night and drilled right down in the Arduino forums and stumbled across these little Amps and people say they do not a bad job, but have some little quirks here and there. So I bought myself a (RED) TPA3116D2 2x100W Board from Banggood and thought I will work the rest out before it arrives.
https://www.banggood.com/TPA3116D2-...io-Amplifier-Board-For-Arduino-p-1091924.html

So I got excited and also pulled the trigger on an Assembled PCM1794 + AK4118 DAC Decoding Soft Control Board Without USB CARD without doing much research. Eeek fingers crossed!

And now looking to buy this XMOS U8 32bit USB Card to attach to it - http://www.ebay.com/itm/XMOS-U8-32B...157886&hash=item19f8286edb:g:ztsAAOSwnDxUfwgu

So I just need to work out how to do the power supply and pick up an aluminium extruded case from Aliexpress. Is there anything else I need?

I’m hoping what I have so far works well together and please can I get some feedback on where I can mod things to improve the sound quality, like replacing capacitors etc. I also watched this video on YouTube where the lad recons he done some shorting and it improved the gain

The end goal is a system I can use in the living room for casual music and with the tv. I'm hoping I can rig something up that I can control with my TV remote with the help of some Arduino magic. I can already tell I'm hooked on all this and playing with the Arduino will make me even more obsessed with DIY Amp Dacs - I love tinkering!

Thanks lads for this thread. There is a lot to read!!!

EDIT: Was also looking at the Icepower 125ASX, I know the there is a BIG difference in the price but would it be that much better and is there any pros and cons? Thanks again

G'day Maverick2020,

If you are into tweaking these boards, have a look back (way back) on this thread.
As a possible starting reference, most of the guys who "paved the way" with different input and supply caps etc used a more mod friendly board. The "mods" should still apply to the dual chip board.

Now that I got my phono preamp in and am moving my TPA3116 system into the "public listening room," I am finding that I need a good switch box. Need a minimum of three inputs. What are you guys using?

My 6n3 2 tube "Sainsmart" (though not officially) preamp is on the way. According to tracking info it's in Illinois after flying across the sea.

I'm excited to get it mounted in a box. Any recommendations for an enclosure? Should I try to enclose it with the TPA3116, or build it as a separate, disconnected preamp? I am of two minds on this one.

Mine fit perfectly in this wooden box from Michaels. The wood is fairly thin but it works and looks good with the tubes protruding through the top.

Just that some report the fake "Sanyo" electrolytics start bulging as soon as power is connected, but maybe the "Sanyo's" are just there for picture and you receive one with good chinese branded electrolytics. Measured ripple (there is a thread somewhere with measurements on this psu) is a little high, but most 3116 ampboards are not very sensitive to that. Some consider it unsafe.

I've used similar power supplies, together with an LT1083 regulator, as recommended by a contributor to this thread:
