AR 14 and AR 10 speakers?

There is a dude selling these for pretty cheap. They need new coning but I can do that. But, I don't know much if anything about Acoustic Research speakers and haven't heard them yet - don't know if I should bother. Can anyone give me their thoughts on them? How do they compare to Yamaha NS5's or Small Advents?

I have a pair of AR 14 speakers and they have a really good sound. I would recommend buying them. I don't know about the Yamahas but they are better than the Advents. The problem with the AR's is that they have those foam grills that have deteriorated into mush. I bought new ones from AR but they cost $80 and I don't know if they are still available as I heard that AR went under.

AR10 is a "modern" (relatively speaking) version of the AR-3. Actually pretty durn similar AFAIK. If you like the AR-3/AR-3a sound, you'd likely love the AR-10's.

AR-14's are from the same line ("Teledyne-era" AR) and are two ways with a nice soft dome tweeter. They share that AR-"house" sound. I like it, but some don't.

Not sure if generic surrounds will fit these woofers (may be 11" woofers). I have THREE AR-14's at home if I ever get round to re-surrounding them :-)
Partsexpress' surround selection's worth a look... maybe also checking their on-line speaker forum(?). Might also be worth asking at AA's Vintage forum.

The AR11 was the one that looked like an AR3 (11" woofer, dome mid, dome tweeter). Dunno, but I always thought the AR10 was a smaller speaker?

We've actually got a pair of AR8bx speakers here at the shop (6.5" 2-ways), and I thought the AR10 was in that same series? Like an 8" or 10" 2-way?

Of course, AR did "recycle" some model numbers in the late Teledybe era (late '80s)... it could be one of these confusions...

Regards,
Gordon.

The Teledyne-era AR-10 was the big brother of the AR-11. The flagship of that line was the AR-10pi (sounds like the number of a Russian vacuum tube!) which had little 'environment' switches hidden behind a flip-down panel in the front to configure LF response for against the wall, away from the wall, or something-else placement.

I'll post a scan from the brochure when I get a chance.

Gordon was righter :-) than I allowed in my first post. Sorry!

The TOTL was the AR-10pi, with its "Woofer Environmental Control". The AR-10pi sans "Woofer Environmental Control" was the AR-11. The model line which I remember (1977) had no unsuffixed AR-10. There could easily have been an AR-10 later (they liked to recycle model numbers).

Here's a chunky scan of the 10pi. The "Woofer Environmental Control" switches are hidden behind that wood panel above the grille.

and heeeeeers the AR-11 :-)

My buddy bought AR 10 Pi new in high school, still has them. A decent speaker if the price is right.
