Project/one turntable

I recently purchased a project/one turntable on ebay. It is in really good condition but i'm just wondering the best way to tune up the tone arm weight and the anti skate. I don't have a manual so I do not know the recommended weight/anti skate settings. If anyone knows anything about these turntables please help me out. thanks.

It depends on what cartridge you're using. Also, is there an additional model number on the turntable, like DR-115, for example?
 
I'm at work right now, but i'll post all of that info when i get home tonight. I'm pretty sure it's just the Project/One though.

Wrong turntable! That manual is for the much more recent Pro-Ject 1 made by Pro-Ject in Europe.
mixupthemix's deck is a fairly bog standard 1970s Japanese OEM design - from a UK market point of view i recongise it as a Hitachi - PS18 or PS28 if i remember correctly.

As to setting the weight, the XLM has a tracking force range of 0.9-1.75g with a recommended value of 1.2g, so if you set both weight and anti-skate to 1.2g, this is a good place to start.
 
Note: It's a Project/One, not a Pro-ject 1. It's a homonym, but not the same tt. :D

Decent cartridge, .75 - 1.5g tracking, so I'd set tracking force at 1.25g. Almost any s-arm turntable is set up the same way, but briefly, here's how it's done. You rotate the counterweight until the tonearm is balanced--that means that it's floating horizontally. You then rotate the calibrated dial only so that zero is at the top. Then you rotate the counterweight (the dial will move along with it for the ride) so that the line indicating 1.25 (or thereabouts) is at the top. That's it--you have set the tracking force. Now set the anti-skate at the same number, 1.25, and you're ready to go.
 
Right, well beobloke and my sources vary slightly on the tracking force range, but the end result is the same.

And yes, it's a Japanese design--if not using proprietary geometry, it's probably using Stevenson, so if you want to check the alignment, first try the Stevenson protractor at vinylengine.com. The cartridge should be kept square with the headshell.

Do you guys recommend using a slipmat? what are some good ones that aren't too costly? Also, what would be a good upgrade from the stylus i have now?
 
I found one of these at a yard sale today (the exact same one as in the picture above). No headshell, and it wouldn't hold a steady speed at 33, and the guy wanted $20. I got there at closing time, and he said if he still had it tomorrow afternoon he might take $10.

It holds a steady speed at 45, just not at 33. I'm thinking some Deoxit on the 33 pot will hopefully do the trick. How likely is this? I have a few extra headshells laying around, so no biggie (other than the fact that the right cart would have increased it's value). Based just on appearance, it doesn't seem to be much different than my current Fisher MT-6225. Same s-shaped tonearm, same mdf with woodgrain vinyl plinth. If it were an audible upgrade from what I have now that would be great, but I doubt it. Maybe it would flip on eBay based on the name. At any rate, I'm wondering how big of a deal the speed issue likely is.

Spray both pots for good measure and the 33/45 switch. I believe both turntables were made by CEC, but still the arm design at the pivot is different, so it's worth comparing to see which sounds better.
 
Well, yes, I would clean everything once I bought it. What I am trying to determine at the moment is if I should buy it. In other words, if the 45 being stable indicates that the problem with the 33 is the pot and not a circuit or motor issue.

So is the Clone Project One TT worth it?

To revive an old thread, is the TT in the early posts from 2007 about a Project One clone (not the real Pro-ject 1) a decent TT if it is fully functional with a cartridge? I think this thread is stating that the one I've pictured below is a Hitachi but it is still a pretty TT and it's only $80 seven years later. So curious is it worth it and what should I look for when I see it tomorrow TIA. Mike

I ended up with this one for $25, but I am having the same issue with 33 speed not holding steady, so clean or something else?

Anyone have any docs on this TT? TIA Mike
 
Project One and Pro-ject are completely different brands. Each has nothing to do with the other outside of similar sounding names.

BTW, I never followed up on my post here. I installed a new pot and now the table is playing beautifully at a campus friend of mine's place. It is a surprisingly decent sounding table.

BTW, these are the pots. Cheap as dirt, but they come in a four pack. Three of the four worked but it was fine since I only needed two.

I replaced both while I was in there even though only one was symptomatic.
