Some Pioneer Pics....

Glenz75

Sansui and Pioneer Freak
Hi Guys,

Just thought I'd post a photo of some of my Pioneer receiver's I have in my collection, since there seems to be alot of talk about SX1050s and the likes on here lately, so here are my own gems :)
The SX1280 on the bottom, I have had this since 1994. This is what got me started on this Pioneer 'disease' of collecting this quality old gear, I just fell in love with the thing when I first clamped eyes on it. I paid $600 NZD for it ($370 USD) and that was 10 years ago! :)

The SX1050 was given to me, as the owner was going to dump it as he took it to a local repair shop and was told it was 'had it' - no parts availible. Being a electronics tech, I traced the fault to a crook transistor on the power supply board, replaced all the old caps, readjusted the idle current/bias ont he output stages and its been peforming good ever since, and it is in very tidy order.

The CTF9191 was part of a packaged deal I got about a year ago which included a SX1250, HPM100s, PL530 T/table ( next to the rc'vers in the photo) andall the handbooks, sales brochures etc and I got the whole lot for $300 USD. Not a bad deal! But finding the SX1250 which I'd been wanting, took seven years of looking/advertising for one etc.. This sort of gear is not common in New Zealand.

I may post more pics of my other gear later on as I don't visit this site much, but always good to see other keen Pioneer "Nutters" like myself out there.... I'm really hankering after a SA9500/9900... They are a 'nice' looking amp, I have never even seen one in the flesh! I feel deprived!!.... There are some nice looking ones on ebay too!:D

Cheers
Glen

Thats a pretty kick ass lookin' stack you got there :thmbsp:

I have only one Pioneer (poor me)...but it is the SX-5590 :D and I gave a pristine SX-850 to my brother as a gift recently.

Thanks John :)

The SX-5590 is a black faced version of a SX1050 if I remember rightly. I too had a mint SX850, but sold it to buy a Sansui amp or something as I collect Sansui also ;) Will post a photo of the SX1250 at some stage....
Cheers
Glen

Actually, AFAIK the 5590 is the black version of the 1250 and the 5570 is the black version of the 1050.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

Nice ones, Glen!

I have a CT-F4242 cassette deck which I believe is from around that era, and the style and function are both unbeatable. Mine has probably never been serviced and works flawlessly; I got it along with an SX-626 (the outputs died on me unfortunately), but this thing soldiers on. Got those two along with a couple of other pieces for US$40. Sweet.

I also have an SX-3700 wich is an incredible performer for around $40 as well I seem to recall.

Cheers,

Dennis from another British Colonised island (Bermuda)

Here's a couple pics of my SX1250.
I have it on the bench for a little cleaning.
I will post a couple other receivers later.

Hi there Glen, how weird, there is another Glen in this world who likes this old Pioneer gear huh ;)
I see you've replaced the filter caps in your SX1250, as mine also need replacing, they're actually leaking out the terminals, so I don't want to use it till foe long periods untill I replace those caps. Where did you source those blue ones from and did they cost each?? I would post a pic of my 1250, but its in pieces as I'm doing all the caps on the power supply boards etc and cleaning all pots/switches with Dexoit, but once I source those filter caps I will continue on with it. It is in very nice condition inside and out.

John - you could be right about that I think the SX-5590 is the black version of the 1250.

Thanks for the reply elbowgeek :) I have a SX737 in the bedroom system running a set of Sansui SP1200's

Cheers

"Hi there Glen, how weird, there is another Glen in this world who likes this old Pioneer gear huh "

Yes, Pretty strange to say the least especially
after I checked out your profile. Many of the same
interests and we are 10 years and 10 days apart
in age.

"I see you've replaced the filter caps in your SX1250, as mine also need replacing, they're actually leaking out the terminals, so I don't want to use it till foe long periods untill I replace those caps. Where did you source those blue ones from and did they cost each?? "

The caps that are in there are from a company
called capacitor technology. The company either
doesn’t exist anymore or they changed their name.
I haven’t been able to locate them. Here's a couple
places you can get what need.

You should be able to get decent quality
caps for roughly $35 a piece without too much trouble.
what ever you get just make sure to check out the dimensions
of the cap before you buy it. If they are too long the top
cover won't seat properly. In an SX1250 you have about
4 5/8" to work with.

It seems you have the situation well under hand.
Anytime I do a restoration I usually end up doing
a complete teardown. It makes it much easier for
me to work with especially when you start cleaning it.
Then I usually end up resoldering all the connections
on the boards. Just that step alone has saved me a lot
headaches.

Let us know how it all turns out.
Glen.

I just did this on a SX-1250, pics here. I used Nippon (United) Chemi-Con caps from Newark. The 22,000µf 80V caps from Percy will also work fine (the Chemi-Con 22,000µf 100V caps and the Nichicon KG Gold 22,000µf 80V caps are both the same size as the original Pioneer caps so you may reuse the original Pioneer capacitor mount brackets). I went with the Chemi-Con caps because of the screw terminals...I hate soldering to capacitor lugs.

Oh yes...and my name is Glenn too (two 'n's);)

HI guys! :)

Gee this is getting rather odd now! ;) All these "Glens" who are into old Pioneer gear?? What is the world coming too!! :lmao:

Thanks for the info Glen65&echowars on places to source those caps, I will look into that. I'm the same when overhauling these old beasts I generally strip them right down and clean everything properly etc, it does make some boards easier to access etc, mind you I find those SX1250s not bad to work on at all as I did a full overhaul on one for a customer not long ago. This had noisy transistors on the p/amp boards/powersupply faults due to dry joints and cooked electro's etc, its all completed and back to the guy and he's a happy lad now. :)

Do you guys find those DC offset/idle adjustment pots used on the old Pioneer amps/rc'vers give trouble?? I've had those things give me grief in the past and now replace them with as a general rule. One my own SA9100's I had a problem where the idle adjsutment volts would shoot up, then down, all over the place, how the poor outputs didn't go splat! :dunno: (they made 'em better in those days...;) ) and it turned out to be the idle adjust pot had a internal intermittent break on the carbon track... Don't ya love those annoying things!
But thats the challenge though, nutting these faults out, unlike these horrible modern 'things' with micro-processors all through..AT least with this old stuff everythings discrete and you can work on it.

My motto "Out with New and IN with the Old!":D
Cheers

"Do you guys find those DC offset/idle adjustment pots used on the old Pioneer amps/rc'vers give trouble?? "

Yes! Now I replace them automatically the ones they
use from the factory are usually cheap junk. The
cost of new ones is not that much so I dont even mess
with the old ones.
