Marantz 2230.....Miracle!!...102nd unit ever made

AudioPuppet

Very interesting story I have to tell
I just picked up a Engraved Champagne Faced 2230 but , the serial number read 61102.....hmmm....somehow this faceplate ended up on this unit right? keep reading......As I was servicing this piece I noticed the following...Grey Power Caps , Elna caps exclusively , bronze chassis , voltage regulator , no production date on the top of the assembled front carriage , NEC output transistors hmmmmm....1st year orl very early production traits.....this is weird right? All these values point to first year production.......this was from the original owners that bought this unit in 1972........hmmmm......... interesting , how can this be serial #61102 if this was bought in 1972 . this supreme model was only made from 1971 til 1974.........Here is the clincher....... on the under belly gasket plate of the transformer is a stamp reading 61102 and this was the number to be engraved on the serial number plate. Lets say its the first production run of this model and they hadn't quite crossed the t's and dotted the i's yet. (it was Japan and English is not their first language after all.....lol ) Someone wasn't paying attention to detail or made a mistake , maybe misunderstood and added a extra digit when it was being stamped for post production................ The only plausible explanation is the 6 is a typo.
The actual serial # is 1102.........First Year One Hundred and Two.

Please feel free to discuss.......lol.....sounds dynamite btw :music:

I have a gold face, engraved 2230 as well with wood case in NM condition. I will have to check the SN. This is not a great picture of mine:

I don't want to hijack your thread, but I want to know where you have to put the volume level to get a decent amount of volume. Every other receiver I have wants to be at 8-9 o'clock, and my 2230 wants to be at 12-1 o'clock. Just wondering...

Picz !!

Here are a few pics the power cord is first generation too.
Honestly . this is an anomaly , One Of A Kind !!!.....Think I put Led's in her and sell her on the bay :D .......lol

That is truly bizarre! I never would have believed it if I didn't see it. Could it be a European version? That could explain the different serial number.

Very neat!!

That might be possible but that would defeat the purpose of the sequential 4 digit serials. It is identical to my other champagne face except that one has Hitachi outputs transistors serial# 3924.

I think your 2230 isn´t a European Model! Because the European Version has a plate which explains that there is a multivoltage trafo inside.

And only the engraved models have the exclusive "Made in Japan" letter! I´m confused .....

2215
Here you can see a serial above 1999. So Marantz built more than
one thousand models (maybe 4 or 5 thousand) of the special series.
It make sense with the serial from AudioPuppet.

Do you know this info site?

This man sold the units a few month ago:

On his pictures you can also see the difference faceplate colour between the champagne 2270 and the Model 19.

Thanks Henrie

Ok, I have researched this till I was passing out from exhaustion and this is my summary.
The Special Edition Champagne Faced Receivers where the first one's made starting serial # 1000. I believe now that they were only produced in the first year. I'm basing this on the 2 2230's that I have. # 3924 and the freak one of a kind #61102 (extra 6 typo ) . They are identical in every way except the outputs and the powercord. (NEC , Hitachi ) The normal #3924 has the Marantz insignia cord. The freak has a first generation cord that you will see on equipment from 1971/72 ( like Pioneer) which they never used in the following years . I now believe only 4000 or 5000 were ever produced and only in the very beginning , I stand corrected :D

I have finished my work on this piece and it is visually and sonicaly stunning I installed Don's LED's too cause it is Serial # freak of nature . I might put her in a mint woodie and toss her on the Bay just for kicks....Joking!!!....:D.... What do ya think???

I think once you start talking about selling this on ebay in this forum you are treading on thin ice.

Dude , I thought this :D meant joking......lol....I wouldn't move a piece that in my mind is a one of a kind , not another one in the world like it ( anomaly serial # I'm talking )...... What do ya think of the work I did as in pictures???......LOL
