Sansui 4000 tuning needle lamp replaced

Finally replaced the lamp in the tuning dial pointer. The FM lamp was out.

Attached are photos of the tuning needle adventure.

There are two grain of wheat bulbs snug in the pointer.

According to the Service Manual 5V 60mA (if I am reading correctly).

I first tried Radio Shack 12V 60mA but it was disappointingly dim.

Bought some 5V lamps of unknown mA and they worked. Much brighter. I cut the wire leads to about 1/2" to insert into the corresponding clear wire sleeves leading to the tuning needle.

The lamps are glued down with some kind of tacky glue. I had to use a needle and round toothpick to dig the FM lamp out. I later reglued with some flexible silicone glue. Although it seemed to be secure without the glue, didn't what to take the chance of the wires shorting on the metal ridges.

Key to Pics

01RBB1: Shows tuning pointer wires.
Red wire has a clear sleeve to insert one wire of the FM lamp.
Blue wire has a clear sleeve for one wire of the AM lamp.
Black wire is a shared sleeve where the other wire from the AM and FM lamps are inserted.

02FMlit: Shows the FM lamp inserted and lit up. Closest to the rim. Careful do not touch wire leads to the metal pointer frame. It will sizzle, smoke, and short. :)

03FMcloseup: Shows FM on pointer is a reddish orange.

04FMmed: Just a medium FM shot to show scale.

05AMlit: Hard to tell but the lit AM lamp is just behind the FM lamp.

06AMcloseup: Shows AM pointer with a lighter yellowish orange color.

07AMmed: Medium AM shot to show scale.

08Done: All done and together.

I know this is an old thread, but thanks for posting this. I have to attempt the same job on my 4000. It's amazing what you can find on this forum. You guys certainly know your stuff. Thanks!

Where can buy the dial lamp please?

I searched many threads and also checked the Sansui Solid State 4000 SM. The SM does list the bulbs on page 25 but from the diagram I only found PL012 and PL013. I have already replaced the dial and meter lamps.

Does anyone have a list of bulbs (type, size, voltage & ampere)that go into the Sansui - Aux, Phono1, Phono2, FM/AM dial pointer (3 - prong bulb) and FM stereo? Thank you
