My new antenna project... (yet another ant thread)

Hey all...

I'm beginning an antenna project, after much research.
I'll share it because it may be useful for some, and I'll
begin with describing my circumstances, which are likely
fairly typical and are the reason for doing it.

I live in a ground floor condo apartment with no possibility
of mounting anything outdoors.
Its RF hell, with all manner of garbage spewing apliances
the neighbors seem to use most of the time.
Its unbelievable. Some days it completely wipes out
AM, and even strong FM stations have distorted audio
cuz of it.
Its worst on weekends... naturally.

I've had good luck (to a point) for AM, with loops.
The untuned loop described here in several other threads,
but ONLY IF used together with a nearby large Tuned
loop.
The large tuned loop with pickup coil wired to tuner in
is best.

The challenge right now, is usable quality FM.
Specificially, good enough sound quality to justify a
good tuner in the main system.

ONLY on the lowest end of the band..
Ie: 88-92Mhz, I've recently discovered a handful of good
stations, with several really nice programs on them.
Enough that, if they'd come in well, I'd be more than
satisfied with that.... and I'd be able to have full time
music from radio while totally ignoring the commercial
stations above 92 on the dial.
All of the ones I like have no commercials as well.
Some NPR-music, some schools, etc.

I've read most if not all the J-pole threads and some web
sites on the topic.
I've determined that FOR ME.. a jpole is NOT the way to go.
Firstly because its hard to tune one correctly without an
FM transmitter. I don't happen to have one on hand.. heh..
Second, because I need a directional antenna.
Jpole is omni.
I need that for several reasons, including rejecting the
noise that comes from within the building.
Next, I need some gain... at least a little bit.
Size is also somewhat of an issue..

The equipment I use is:
MD base loaded whip thingy--> MD Signal-Sleuth-->
MD FT-101 tuner-->downstream is irrelevant to the
topic so I'll spare you all. :nerd:

The base loaded whip thingy is...
first of all, inadequate.
I know... big surprise. :yikes:
Its mounted to a piece of wood and sitting on a table
near a window.
Actually a corner area, with 2 windows 90 degrees apart.
Its the best place in the appartment for reception.

In that area, it gets most of the signal comming from
outside, and the least of the RF garbage from within.
I can (and DO) stick it out the window sidewise.. ie: horizontal
polarization, and this makes a BIG improvement... again
not much of a surprise.
Whats a slightly bigger surprise, is that there's almost no
multipath with it that way... a big problem when its inside
and vertical.
This applies to the low-band stations I want, and not so much
to the big commercials up the band.

The point is.... I've been able to experiment enough to
know what works and what is the wrong direction, both
literally and in terms of what kind of 'tenna config I need.

The bottom line is, if I can get just a few more DB of signal,
together with a bit of noise attenuation, I'll be able to
achieve my goal.
Every last uV of signal counts!

A jpole will pickup all the noise and limit placement.
In the window area, I'm close to line of site to all the
stations I want.
Out the window just barely gives me line of sight, though
there must be some bounce off the building sides...

My first (recent) attempt at a new antenna, was a failure.
It was to be a folded dipole tuned to 90Mhz, to tailor it to
the range of stations I need..
That way, peak resonance would give me a couple of DB
where I need it.
Also, directional, so it would tend to reject stuff from the
sides... ie: inside the building.
Seemed the best I could do.

It failed because of the following.
I chose to make it from something found at HomeDepot/Lowes.
I noticed, in the wire section, whats called grounding wire.
Its just thick bare copper... either 4 or 6 ga IIRC.
First prob was that its fairly flexible.. or.. easy to bend.
Since I chose to mount it by hanging it from a ceiling fixture,
it wanted to sag... and not hold shape.
The other problem... also mounting related..
is that the coax feeder puts torque on it.

It looks like the driven section of a TV antenna.
Wide radius folds.. about 2 1/4in.
In other words, a thick bare copper wire curved back 180
degrees at the ends, to almost touching at the center.

Since its a folded dipole, it needs 300R cable, and to be
end fed.
Since my tuner has only 75R connector, I needed to use
a balun.
So I soldered a typical mast mount balun to the ends
where they almost touch, and zip-tied the balun to it.
As soon as it moved, the solder joints.... no, the thin
flatlead wires themselves broke.
Not to mention it took forever to heat up the copper enuff
for the solder to flow...

Hence...
Back to the drawing board.

I pondered and pondered... how to make it work.
I finally realized it won't... not easily at least, and began
to look elsewhere.
Problematic tho, since the folded dipole config gives me
everything I need.
Mounting remains the problem, as there will always be
the need for the coax (with its torque effect) which makes
it impossible to turn, and difficult to add a needed balun to.

My first thought, was to cut it down to a single dipole, but
with less efficiency, and still the need to fabricate a mounting
arrangement... still with the coax torque had me perplexed.

I stumbled upon something else coincidently, and only as
something
I decided to click on, just after deciding to give up and go
to bed.
Providence caused me to click just that one more time.

Its something I've never seen discussed before...
Not for FM at least, and that I know of it at all has to do
with distant past recollections of ham stuff.

Its a "cubical-quad/single-turn-loop!
HUH?!?! :eek:

AKA: "simple FM loop".

I think this might be a "breakthru" for some of us.
Naturally, the proof is in the testing, and I've only just begun.

Got the parts yesterday, and stuck em together.
Still needs a lot of work.

I'm making mine out of 1/2in copper tubing (jpole style ;-)
for reasons I'll explain below.
4 sections of tubing + 4 90 degree elbows.
First I have to clean the pieces then solder em..
Clean for good contact, and cuz they're filthy and a bit
oxidized.

The main reason is mounting... which remains the prinicpal
problem.
1/2in copper tubing will allow using a PVC T-section at
the bottom.
That gives the opportunity to have a section of an otherwise
square to have an electrical "break-point".
A point where there are ends... that don't touch.
Also a place to connect the wires to.
As well as a mounting provision.. ie: PVC tube stuck into
the bottom of the T.
You can then run the coax down the inside of the PVC tube.
The PVC T section will electrically seperate the 2 halves
of the cut section, and join them, as well as providing
routing for the wires, and something non-electrical to
use the clamp on.

It will look basically like the one in the above pic... except
in copper tubing.

Might use a PVC cross section rather than a T.
Then I could add another upright length of PVC for bracing.
Then it would really be like in the pic.

I'm thinking of putting a cap on the end of the PVC tube
and putting a chassis mount F connector in the cap.
That way, one end of the coax can be soldered to the
antenna "element" and the other to the F connector.
All the wiring would be invisible, as all would be inside the
tube and the T.

That would leave a PVC tube "stub" for mounting.
So far, the best I've come up with as a "stand" is a micorphone
stand with a mic clamp to hold the PVC.

That is the main remaining challenge, and I'd be greatful
for suggestions!

Its fairly big.. at 33in across, but managable.
Plus, its flat. So you can shove it behind the record
cabinet when not in use.

When I first spotted that article I thought: Whoah! a loop..
For FM no less...
Well a loop has worked best for AM here so... I'd best
read on..

For me, this provides the few DB of gain that would help
push the noise down and directionality.
I'd likely not even have to put it out the window anymore.
And if I did.. it can be used horizontally like the article says.
Its also natively 75R so no baluns with associated problems
needed.

This time, I hope it works out, and provides a good solution
for others who share my FM difficulties!

Also hope the above makes sense, and I appologize for
the length of the post!

I am very interested to see what your results will be. I am in a similar situation (renter) with complicated multipath problems (mountains). I, too, attempted a half-wave dipole cut to pull in the low frequency band. (The clerk had to go to the back of the store to find any - said he hadn't had anyone ask for over a year.) I mounted the wire on a some wood lath and fixed the wood cross beam to the end of a telescoping closet rod. My hope was that I could adjust the height and direction to maximize reception.

Well, it wasn't sufficient to pull in the 1 station I was hoping to get. However, it did improve the depth of sound of the other 2 low band stations I could already pull in well enough. So, it worked, sort of. But, in addition to the 6-foot long cross beam being an eyesore when placed for optimal reception (I felt like some kind of Easter pilgrim when adjusting it :nerd: ), it was just too fragile. The wires broke in a fashion similar to what you described after several days.

I decided the benefit was too marginal for the inconvenience and resigned myself to not having access to the 1 station.

Your project, if successful, however, might get me to give it another go.

I might try something like that as an interim solution, but
given the time and effort, its best I just get to the main
project.
Particularly given the difficulties/results you mentioned.

I happened to be at the location where my "stuff box" is
and pulled out one of the several pre-made dipoles that
"comes in the box" with every tuner/radio you buy..
just for kix..
Of the 2 types, its the single/unfolded variety, so I wouldn't
need a balun..
Thought I might give it a while in the config you mentioned.
Still to many mounting issues tho..

I saw that article and had a go myself. I built a working mock up by just taping two dowels together to form a cross and then taped co-ax in the shape of a square to the dowels. Looked like a bad Charlie Brown kite, after the tree got it. Despite being very rough and crude it worked surprisingly well. I had a friend who is handy with wood make a nice square the right size and ran the co-ax around the outside secured with zipties. Wood and zipties, nice and non-magnetic. Terminated it with the same kind of terminal block as in the article. A long one for .99 cents can be cut up to make about 5 antennas. This permanent one worked so well I told my friend to make himself one and then two more for me. Great results in all three systems in different parts of the house from 88.5 to 107.9.
 
Greg, I'll move my reply from the other thread over here as I've an antenna suggestion for you.

Radio Shack 15-1868 rabbit ears - non-amplified, 42" whips, tuning switch, and most importantly, a gold plated F connector out which lets you use any length RG6 to the tuner.

I am due north of you off Cypress Creek Rd in a SF home, My M/D FT-101 is in my garage/man cave and is fed by the RS 'ears , which are at an 8' height. FMfool shows me @ 59 miles from the WKCP transmitter, with a line of sight height of 35'. (thus my whip which feeds my Citation 23 being at 35') My FT101 strength meter is consistantly around 4 on 89.7 and 4.5 with 88.5 and 91.3 when using these rabbit ears. My multipath meter so rarely ever moves that I have to detune just to check that its working (gotta love flat terrain). I think I paid $30 or so for this antenna - pricey for 'ears but these work better than cheaper ones I've tried.

Might be worth a try for you, as you can always return them if they don't work out.

Meanwhile, I'm working on the construction of the antenna.
My deadline is midnight tonight, as tomorrow (sun) is
"music day"!
Great music programing on FM all day down here in SoFla.

I got a bit delayed since first posting, due to things not
fitting together as envisioned, nescessitating another trip
to Lowes (which is to be expected) ...and a bit of a stomach bug.

With a little luck.. (ok, maybe a LOT) I should hopefully
have some results to post later this evening.

As of now.. its "mocked up"... pieces fitted together, loosely..
enough so I could hold it up as it will be when done,
though it wants to fall apart right away.
Its fairly large but managable, and thin for stow-ability.
Needs a few more pieces to go together correctly/solidly,
and needs to be soldered up, including soldering the wires
to it... along with some fine tuning.

I'll spare further details for now, till I've something coherent
to say on it.
 
G'day all, interesting thread. Yes I'm a fan of 'one wavelength' loop antennas. I've made a loose wire loop antenna 'cut' for the middle of the FM broadcast band, that's draped across a wardrobe in my bedroom fed with a random length of 300 ohm ribbon (SWR about 2.5:1), feeding into my beloved GE Superadio Mk2 mono AM/ FM receiver.

It works extremely well, but I'm not surprised at all as these kinds of antennas are great 'cut' for whatever frequency one likes.

I am looking to build an antenna that will pull in a college jazz station that is too far away to pull in with my normal antenna. 90.9 fm WDCB
 
Hi all - Maybe I shouldn't be here, but I love trying different things to pull in far away FM stations. I also live on the bottom floor of a building - with poor reception.

My living room tuner is hooked up to the roof antenna, so decent reception there. My bedroom tuner has a simple dipole antenna taped to the window.

I don't know if this breaks your rules for improving reception 'naturally', but I use an old Radio Shack Archer FM Amplifier (see pic) to improve my reception. The results are amazing, and I can't detect any noise added on most stations.

I bought my first one of these little boxes new way back some 30 years ago. I have since bought two more off that auction site for under $10 shipped. I've tried other FM signal amplifiers, and none have worked nearly as good as this one has.

Just my 2 cents - now back to your scheduled programming :thmbsp:

Thanks for the postings and welcome to the thread!

Well, the project has come to screeching halt... for the
moment at least.

I worked like a demon on it till late sat night, with the goal
of having it working for listening on sunday.
The show-stopper was mainly lack of adequate tools.
Specifically, when it came to joining the last few sections
of the copper tubing to their respective elbows, and
soldering the coax to the copper tubing.

Turns out that my Bernz-O-Matic was outa gas...
So I decided to try it with the trusty 'ol weller set to
800 degrees.
I hoped maybe I could pull it off with that, so as to be able
to listen to music on sunday since the stores were already
closed.

It was adequate to heat up each section of tubing... tho
it took forever.. to solder elbows onto a single section at
a time, but when it was all put together, to much heat
was bled off to make the last couple of joints.

Aditionally, the long length of coax did the same when trying
to solder the shield side of the coax to the copper tube.
Center conductor took the solder eventually but just barely.

Couple this with the fact that what seemed like a passing
stomach bug has turned into something much more.
I've got an intense abdominal pain thats so bad I can't
really concentrate on anything.
It had begun to get really bad while working on it sat nite.
I powered thru the pain so as to finish... but at 2 AM it
was clear that it just wasn't gonna take solder, and I was
in agony, so that was it for now.
I managed to get thru the weekend without going to emergency,
and I"ve a Doc appointment tomorrow (tues).

I'm affraid the project is on hold for a few days.
Sorry about that.
Pity too, since its 90-95 % complete, and only really needs
more powerful soldering equipment to be finished.

I was so wishing... both for myself and those following
the thread, to have some results to post by now.
C'est la vie.
I'll get back to it asap.
Meanwhile.....

Of late, I've learned to my surprise... that rabbit ears
are VERY effective!
Just sometimes, you need something more.. as I do in my
particularly bad location/situation.

That does make it appealing.
The tuning knob is a BIG plus too!

While the effectiveness of a good pair of rabbit ears is
indeed surprising... I've determined that I need more
than that in this situation.
In fact I tried an ultra-simple pair and the results were
the same as in my first post.
Also, while at RS sat nite getting the last few odds and
ends, I looked around and didn't see em.

Anyway, I'm so committed to this project now, combined with
the fact that I've been searching for antenna that would
give more than rabbit ears for so many yrs, that I really
want to see it thru, to finally know if theres an alternative
that can be better.

FMfool shows me @ 59 miles from the WKCP transmitter,
with a line of sight height of 35'.
(thus my whip which feeds my Citation 23 being at 35')

I'm a bit perplexed that you've no multipath problem
with the rabbit ears indoors.
Thats assuming I've understood correctly.

With the whip out the window, I get 89/7 at a 4 on
the FT meter.. BUT ONLY.. with the MD Signal Sleuth
cranked up.
Its about a 2-1/2 to 3 without.
91.3 @ 14mi LOS is no prob, even with the whip vertical
and indoors. Gives me a 4 without, and a 4.5 with the
MD Signal Sleuth engaged.
The extra .5 just lowers the backround noise level,
though not trivially.
A bit less noise (electronic grunge from inside the bldg)
with it out the window and sideways.

Flat terrain sure does give certain advantages... if
a bit boring visually.
Not of much help to me right now, given the rest of
the buliding/buildings in this complex.
Good news is... I'll be moving back, in a few months,
into a home I own in the south-eastern corner of
Boca..(I've already pulled up the FM-Fool map of that)
Its gutted while being renovated right now.
A free-standing SF home.. which I lived in for several
yrs, with an antenna pole already there around 35 ft.
Its got a decrepit TV antenna on it that worked fairly
well for yrs... but it needs to be changed out now.

In case you're wondering why the bother now...
First off, I can't stand it any more.. been living
with this for a while now and I WANT MY MUSIC! :-)
Also, if it works out well, I can put it atop the pole
replacing the decrepit TV antenna, since I'll be
considerably further from all the stations I wanna
get.

I hear the 2 is better, but I'm happy with the 3.
It comes in handy for testing stuff too.

Its dawned on me that I'm to ambitious in persuing
these things.
I probably should've started out with a simpler
version as "proof of concept"... but I'm impatient.
Besides, you all have verified that the concept
works, and this is the right direction to go!

It works extremely well, but I'm not surprised at all
as these kinds of antennas are great 'cut' for whatever
frequency one likes.

I, for one, am in favor of doing whatever works!
I think you may be assuming things from something read
elsewhere.

In any case, I think that many have learned that electronic
add-ons or even a great tuner, is VERY limited by the
antenna used with...
That the main thing is to start out with a very good antenna
based on sound theory... and that doing that gives you
more than a great tuner with a signal amp, with a lousy
antenna.
Experience has confirmed that for me.
Good tuners even with signal amps aren't enough when
one's living situation precludes good reception, and when
distance from the weak desired stations is a problem.
I bought my first one of these little boxes new way back some 30 years ago. I have since bought two more off that auction site for under $10 shipped. I've tried other FM signal amplifiers, and none have worked nearly as good as this one has.
I have one of those and love it!
Never did find that it adds a lot of noise, as is the conventional
wisdom.
Maybe a little bit, but gains outweighed the negatives.

Had 2 at one time... one bought in the 70s and it worked
so well I got another in the 80s.
I leant one to a "friend" in the 90s.....
That was the end of that, when he moved outa the area.
Heh..

I always found that it gave an improvement...
Whether with an MD "silver ribbon" attached..
(leant one of those to the friend with it) which
is how I use it now, or with a great roof mount
antenna like how I had it back in the 70s/80s.
At that time, it was hooked to a multi element yagi
from radio shack..
(same as the Antenna Performance Specialties
model sold now... five element I think?) mounted
above the roof line.

We lived on high ground, and it was LOS to the
Twin towers and Empire state building.
(where all NYC radio signals eminate[d] from)
Even with that near-perfect situation, I found that
the little RS amp improved the situation and never
did without it, even tho friends thought it overkill.
It didn't overload the front end, and I found it dropped
the noise level to near nil!

Tuners at that time, were starting to offer Dolby NR
in the better models.
I didn't understand the need.
Didn't know how good I had it all those yrs.. with
a 9 on the S-meter on ALL stations...

Currently I use the Magnum Dynalab Signal "Sleuth" amp
in the main system.
I'm absolutely not promoting any company or product.
It just works, I find.
Helps with a poor or so-so antenna in bad conditions..
up to a point.
Helps LOADS with a good roof mount antenna.
I won't eliminate it for nuthin.
Particularly in my situation, where stations are far enough
away, and/or weak enough that every bit helps even
with a good roof mount antenna!

One station is so far away and so low power... and even
hobbled by the FCC in terms of radation patters to protect
TV ch 6... that its practically hopeless.
(WDNA 88.9.. great 24/7 jazz)
Thing is... the programing is so great that its a must have.
Even with a good roof-mount yagi, it needs ALL the help
it can get!

Thing about the Sleuth... besides being an RF amp, its also
highQ.
Meaning... its tunable to a very narrow frequency, so it
amplifies ONLY that narrow area.. and that helps the
tuner to "push down" the noise at every other frequency.
 
How about making a cubical quad with at least a driven, director and one reflector element? There are plenty of free programs out there that will figure out the spacing and lengths for you at many a ham sites. I have constructed 3 or so cubical quads over the years and they always beat out yagis for the amount of elements used as well as being much quieter. You will increase your gain significantly with a 3 or 4 element beam and you will also be a believer:yes: .

How about making a cubical quad with at least a driven, director and one reflector element? There are plenty of free programs out there that will figure out the spacing and lengths for you at many a ham sites. I would luv to make a multi element version!
Seen the javascript calculators on the web.

Since mine is for indoor use... and that I'm having enuff
probs just getting this simple one done.....
AND that you already have experience................

Permit me to humbly suggest... that you come up with
one and let us know how it works. :smoke:

Some gain is definately what I need.
Quieter is also a BIG plus, in my situation.
Thanks for yet some more affirmation that this approach
is the way to go!

Of the appendix, the only thing that really hurt was the cost.

The pain started in the middle of my belly, going towards the lower right quadrant later in the day. Weird side effect was that I was unable to pass gas or drop a deuce.

If you have any of these symptoms, get thee to an emergency ward.

Dang Muzak! :worried: I surely hope that your appointment goes well tomorrow. Hopefully it will not be something serious. Get better first. We can wait on the results of the antenna project.
