2009 Chicago-Area AK Get Together - February 28

I finally found time to put my main home system back together and as much as I like my Dynaco 70/Fisher 300 bi-amp setup, I think the Dynaco MkIIIs sounded better.

I'll just blame it on my room so I don't have to run out and buy two more tube amps...

Thanks again, all, for making it a great day. I've come a long way in my audio-journey since the get together we had last year, and owe much of that to those who were in attendance Saturday.

Brian, that Art Blakey was pretty sweet huh?
Yes, indeed! Thanks, Ed! Hope you can make it over here on Saturday...there's a lot of classic jazz here to check out. Duke, Ella, Mingus, you name it. And a direct dub lacquer cut direct from the master tape on the lathe (no stampers) that might make you think the acoustic guitar is in the room. Scary, dude!

I don't have many pics that Bob didn't already post, but here's a couple...

First one is a good pic of the size of Mike's JBL's.
Next is a shot of the AtmaSpheres, the Kuzma tt, and the Revox B-77 rtr.
Last is Bob's Indignias.

I'll have to take a rain check. I'm ushering at the Elgin Symphony Friday night. Mrs. Manning would have a heart attack if I stuck her with three kids two days in a row, two weeks in a row. Another time?

Absolutely, Ed! Any time. It looks as though a couple of the guys will try to make it over on Sunday. Enjoy the symphony - Hemmens is a nice venue.

I received a PM that CW_82 has some pics of some of the basement systems and will post them when he has time.

Robies Basement Action

Thanks again to all that lugged equipment and Robbie and Collette for hosting.
Loved Robies Indignia "Air Cannon" speakers, if you stood within 8 feet in front of them you know what I mean.
Muddy Waters stopped in for a solo downstairs while the Fostex full range speakers were going. The Sony's were sounding as good as they looked. Dynaco's were rockin, and that sweet Fisher....
Upstairs was a treat as well.

The model numbers on the stuff I lugged in, as a couple people asked me but I don't know if they could hear my response with all the tunes playing...

Sony SS-m7 loudspeakers. Mid '90s
RGR (Robert Grodinsky Research) Model 5 power amplifier. circa 1980.
Sony TA-2000 preamplifier. Late '60s.

I'm glad theirs a picture of Clay's Fisher tube receiver. That was my favorite piece of gear from the whole day.

Thank you for posting that, I had heard he'd passed recently but didn't know when. He lived up in Evanston, one of the guys that worked where I bought that amp had spoken highly of him. He was the RG in the Pioneer RG-1 range expander, probably what he was most remembered for as there were more of those than the small numbers of his own line of amps/preamps.

Actually he lived on Howard St. in Skokie, having visited him a few years ago along with some other audiophiles to hear his State Technology Research gizmos that in reality did more harm than good to the sound. Harry Pearson had mentioned the products in one of his columns in TAS back then, but that's the last anyone heard of them.

Likely, maybe if I can get my act together we can have some sort of shindig at my dump up here (if anyones up for the trip).

Sounds great. I'm getting in the car now.

Seriously, all it takes is for the next one to be set and organized. It just kind of happens after that.

Jim:

Love the JBLs...your wife must be very tolerant. Mine banished my ALtecs to my mom's place.

It was nice talking to you at the party. You were going to give me some info on ALtec Valencia contacts?

Here are a few more of upstairs.

Hey, Jim. Thanks for the pics. It was nice seeing you again last Saturday.

Sorry I missed this (being on the east coast)--looks like a great time and some excellent equipment. And Robie, I always like you avatar photos--nice 2002!
