Pulled this out of a beautifully constructed, home-made, FreeCycle cab. I promise to post pics of the cab, it is a really well made acoustic-suspension piece. Nice mitred corners with well done veneer. For now I'd like any info on this Lafayette driver that I pulled out of it. There are no manufacturer codes printed on the cast basket. The only number printed on the basket is "1116". It has an attached tweeter L-Pad and the whole thing must weigh on the plus side of 10 lbs. It appears to have a treated, half-roll cloth surround and some sort of impregnated paper cone. From what I have been able to garner, it was made by Goodmans of England. Never heard of 'em. There's this weird aluminum-looking accordion structure at the inner-most part of the woofer. As these are touted as being a three-way speaker, I can only assume that this acts as the "mid-range" portion of the driver. Any info?

Goodman has been around for years....made lots of nice British audio equipment!! Lots of biaxial and triaxial speakers...like yours! We have a nice Goodman Receiver....low profile wooden Euro-looking.... Jim

Yep, that's a Goodmans made driver - an Axiom 301. It's a very well regarded driver amongst tube fans, and it's worth ~$300 to the right person. Nice find!

However, it looks like Lafayette have modified it as the 301 has a 2" paper whizzer and not that coaxially mounted tweeter. It was made in two versions - the earlier ones like yours had a paper accordian surround, whereas the more common later models had a reverse-roll rubber surround. The rubber tends to harden with age, so you're one of the lucky ones with paper!

It also had two different models of basket...the earlier type having three solid basket "arms" as opposed to multiple spokes.

Here's a page from the Goodmans catalog showing the early 301. It lists some handy recommended cabinet information.

Any info on this Lafayette, and cab? Is this cab a kit or OEM?

aaarrrggghh!

I had a mint pair of those 12" ones ^^. Like a dummy I stuck them in an old guitar amp I had with blown speakers in it. I used it for a few years and then gave the thing away - I didn't know they were Goodmans! I assumed that they were some generic Utah's or Atlas Sound with Lafayete's name on them. A guitar amp sure isn't the place for those...:no:

Actually, quite a few guitar amps from the 60's had the Axiom 301 (without the little horn) fitted. The Audiom was also a popular choice, sometimes used with the Trebax horn.

Hofner, Vox, Marshall, Fender, Traynor and Garnet all used Goodmans speakers at one point.
