Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

For what its worth, I'm really enjoying the Dayton Classic 10" woofers.

They seem to be a definite improvement over the EPI woofers. I did install the inductor and cap and test the EPI woofer, but had very little improvement. In defense of the EPIs, they measure 4 ohm on the woofer vs the daytons 8 (re is 6.7 according to parts for less), so I probably didn't have the crossover dialed in right.

I need to get some measuring equipment!

Thus far I've used the Daytons in the cabinet sealed mostly, did try the factory 3" x 7" port and it had an annoying bump at around 30 hz, so went back to sealed. I think closer to 14" would be better, don't know that I'll bother.

I doubt I'll modify this cabinet much more, I'm switching to the barzilays before I experiment more. I like the idea of 4 woofers and better sensitivity.

I can't remember where I read this but I do remember some ware that some horns work well and some times better mounted vertically. Would this be something thats been tested. as a way to use this system in narrower cabinets. I know the distribution would change but would it be bad?

Very few constant directivity horns/waveguides are made for vertical mounting, and those that are either have symmetrical dispersion patterns, or are wider in the horizontal when mounted that way. Generally, spraying the ceiling and floor with sound energy is not regarded as desirable, but there are exceptional applications such as floor monitors where they may be intentionally aligned to do so.
 
ALERT: BiggiE-Wave project nearly on-line.

Almost got another big E-wave (hence the name: BiggiE-Wave) project ready for first fire-up.

EV SRO/EVM15B modified with different cone, dustcap and spider, and a DL15 voice coil (longer winding), in about 7.5 cubic feet tuned to around 27 Hz. I've listened to the woofer, and it's going to go LOW in this box. :banana:

It'll just be a matter of whether the standard E-wave crossover will work (with the modified parts, the woofer is just over 95dB, a little bit), or if I'll need to change the resistors and cap in the shelf filter to the over-95dB version. We'll find out shortly, once the drill battery charges back up so I can bolt the last parts into the second cabinet!

Is that only one 4" port?? I think that with a high output 15" woofer you will have serious power compression at lower frequencies. Did you model the port air speed to keep it below 15m/s or so?

Otherwise these speakers look great!! And big!!

WinISD said it was OK... it's usually been pretty reliable, IME. And we ran the crap out of them yesterday- there was no sign of LF dropoff at high output levels...

BTW: The EV woofer, even with the slightly longer voice coil, only has an X-max of around 5mm (just over 17mm VC winding length, in a 7mm gap height- the original voice coil is around 13mm winding height in that 7mm gap, for an X-max of 3mm, in stock form). It's not huge excursion... but apparently, it doesn't need to be. In a home/studio environment, it'll get PLENTY loud.

Also, that port is slightly flared... that probably helps.

I think I will be making one slight mod- I'm going to "dope" the cones with stiffening lacquer, mostly for the purpose of adding a TAD more cone mass. If we drop the woofer sensitivity by about 1/2dB, these things are scary close to beating out some really expensive speakers. As they are now, they're really good... but with that change, they could become world-class...

Very Nice! My self, the e'wave I have is 5 cu ft JBL 4507/4647 boxes. I understand the smaller E'waves too, especially the ones that require the smaller guides, but these big ones are really fun too! Able to seriously rock
with powerful bass! Go big mommu E'waves.:thmbsp:

Does anyone have a recommendation on a waveguide that would work with HF drivers that have a 1.4" throat, 4 bolt. Another option I was also thinking would be to find a adapter that would take it down to 1" and use a spare set of JBL 338800-001 waveguides but I cant find a adapter that will convert it from 1.4" to 1" to use with that either. Any ideas or recommendations???

I'm sure Zilch will be along with a dandy suggestion, but I see 18-sound XT1464 is 1.4" you may want to have a look there.

I'm no compression driver expert but I would think it would be ill advised to step down a 1.4" CD down to 1". I wouldn't think this would lead to very good response at all. You are in effect adding another small compression chamber by necking down the driver.

I agree that its definitely not a great idea but was trying to keep all options open :scratch2:.

Thanks Russellc, it looks like they might have 2 or 3 that might work, I just need to figure out which one would work best.
 
I would not be afraid to try a 1.4" driver on one of the 1.5" JBL PT waveguides. There's a version identical to E'Wave - PT-H95HF, 338650-001, as I recall, ~$100 apiece.

The XT1464 is quite a decent performer and if your room is of the long skinny variety, the tighter pattern can be of some benefit.
