Speakerlab Seven restoration

****! I think I got an air leak on the 10" woofer...

Tweeter is too bright, if I have 7 ohms of attenuation on it, adding 8 ohms to that would probably make it too quiet I bet.

They do not sound good, but I didn't expect them too, especially since I am just listening to one.
 
Okay, they sound much better pushed closer to the walls, and in a stereo pair.

They do not have any stuffing or damping installed yet, so they will (hopefully sound better then)

The bass is not what I wanted it to be, but it's all tweakable.
 
Turns out that the 10" woofers were both out of phase of the 12" woofers!
Swapped the wires and :banana: :banana: :banana: my chest hurts a little from all the pressure!

A-yup. The thing that threw me was that both of the speakers were in phase with eachother, but the DRIVERS in each one were both out of phase with the other. Making swapping of the speaker wires do very little (tried that)
 
Hi Everyone,

I finally got to see "The Sevens" at yesterday's Mercer Island DIY Meet and they were absolutely stunning. The Zebrawood veneer was just awesome with the edges and grain perfectly aligned, a professional looking job if there ever was one.
Overall, it exceeded expectations by a wide margin and was truely the best looking speaker there. The posted photos really don't do them justice and I believe, from the comments I heard, that this was the common concensus from the people attending, a very nice job indeed!

Crap, I wish I could have made the DIY meet but was doing college tours with my daughter yesterday (and a few more weekends).

I'm sure it was a gas seeing and hearing those 7s demo'd, and looking forward to pictures here or on the DIY thread. :thmbsp:

You are welcome to stop by anytime and hear them yourself. I just lugged them back up the stairs this morning... never want to do that again.

Hi Dave,

I thought they actually sounded pretty good although the bass was very pronounced. Will has been burning the candle at both ends to get the Sevens finished for the Meet and as he mentions a couple of posts back, hadn't used any stuffing inside the cabinet. I believe that as soon as he recovers, he'll attend to it. I can't recall an acoustic suspension design that didn't need to have the damping provided by stuffing it with fiberglas or whatever.

I hadn't heard any Sevens since '76 or so, although I almost built a set back then, but decided to go with the K-Horns instead. I do remember that the Sevens had plenty of bass, but my tastes (or hearing) have changed since then and that may have something to do with what I now consider correct tonal and octave to octave balance.

Overall, I think that what he has accomplished is absolutely praiseworthy and hopefully will get to hear them again when they're fully sorted out.
