JVC DD TT Underrated?

Note- I feel the thread has had some light kidding going on here and no true mean spirited intentions.

At least that's what I'm hoping for.

IMHE you can, at the same price tag or much cheaper as you get those japanese DD's for, get much better sounding belt/string driven TT's on the used market.

It does not have to cost an arm or a leg.

But these options doesn't matter much if you fit a low-end-budget-entry-level cartridge or some tonearm flexing all the way over the vinyl.

You are entitled to your opinion and may be correct.

However the question posed isn't addressed by your posts.

The question is if JVC is an overlooked or underrated brand.

And, depending on model of course, folks seem to believe "yes".

The question from the OP never was if folk felt belt or idler drive was better than direct drive.

And $34 the OP put out is a cheap cash outlay for a decent sounding table.

That may indeed be your experience, but my experience (by luck or happenstance) has been far different:

Technics SP-15, Free from a local radio station
JVC QL-A7, $5 from a yard sale
Kenwood KD-3070 w/Ortofon OM-30, $10 from a flea market

Considering the guy who sold me the JVC is a very experienced "Ebay flipper", I'd have to say, yes, the JVC turntables are underrated and overlooked.

Of the many belt-drive models I've picked up (also very cheap) in thrift shops or yard sales, nothing comes remotely close to the quality and performance of the those three direct drive models.

This is not meant as a put down of belt drives.... I'm just patiently waiting to find that high end belt drive turntable at some future yard sale.

Here's my JVC JL-A40 Direct Drive Turntable. I got it in June for $20 at the flea market. It's in great working and cosmetic condition and just put a new elliptical stylus in it yesterday. Original cartridge and headshell has been upgraded in the past to a Realistic/Shure R47 EDT, but a great sounding cartridge. I use it a lot for ripping music to my computer and for Youtube. She's a beauty queen and here's a vid of her singing! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J2FKeVpeSpw

My QL-Y55F. The lid is scratched to rat sh*t, but the table itself is near mint and plays like new. This was not cheap for me to buy after shipping and all, but this was one of my teenage things I used to ogle over. I remember my friend who was a bit of a tosser (as harry potter would say) said his aunt owned a QL-Y66F and had it hooked up to her ghetto blaster?!?!? I was always like why!!!

There is sufficient testimony coming forward which would cast doubt on your conclusion.

Testimony from people with extremely good equipment.Equipment the likes of which most of us(and maybe even you niklas) would aspire to,but rarely be able to afford.Equipment of such a calibre, that no-one could doubt the assesments these people arrive at when they conclude which turntable they prefer listening to.

Your Honour,
My first witness is Mr Albert Porter.
Albert Porter has been the owner of a Walker Turntable(one of the highest-rated belt drive turntables in existance).

Firstly let me present as evidence Mr Porter's system:

Here is Mr Porter's assessment of his Technics SP-10 Mk III:

Your Honour,
My second witness is a gentleman from Australia, who posts under the moniker of 'turntable' on the Aussie 'Stereo Net Australia' site.

His list of equipment reads like a wish-list of ultra high-end marques. There is no doubt that he could not be labelled a novice in the area of critical listening.Let's see what he has to say about the relative merits of Ultra High-End belt-drive vs Vintage Direct Drive:

http://www.stereo.net.au/forums/showthread.php?t=20301

Your Honour,
Both these gentlemen have had hands-on experience of Ultra High-End Belt Drive turntables and Vintage Direct Drive turntables, given in the contexts of systems comprised of components the likes of which,no invalidation of their conlusions can be cast.Their testimonies are there on record. They stand by their conclusions.

Your Honour,
Based on these two testimonies,I hereby propose that the argument that Vintage Direct Drives are incontrovertibly inferior to Ultra High-End Belt Drives, has not been proven.

Indeed Your Honour, the case could certainly be presented(based on these testimonies)that the argument of alleged superiority of the Belt-Drive turntable, might possibly rest on conjecture and supposition.

I hereby submit, that based on these testimonies, those allegations and suppositions need to be re-examined for bias and prejudicial evidence.

The Defence thus requests a retrial,on the grounds of unsubstantiated evidence presented by the Prosecution.

I rest my case,Your Honour. :smoke:

What a funny way tl deliver your message.

However, my time or my english language skills are not available to go into thids as a dialog with you about this subject in the way you invite.

My experiences are different than what you try to put forward.
Shat can I say.
We are all different.
Some people have expensive gear to show off but don't have the match and wouldn't even be able to hear difference on good and bad.
Other people have this ability but don't want to show off.
And some people are in a third or fourth category.

I would not re-purchase any Technics TT into my system anymore.
I'm beyond that point.
Sorry.
And Merry Christmas.

SSSSSHHHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhh!!!!!! :nono:

You'll let the cat out of the bag, and the prices will go up! :sigh:
:D

I've never heard the JL-F50, but for sure the JVC QL-7 is a very nice TT. It was part of a series, also including the higher-up QL-8 and QL-10, with the 10 being the best. They had slightly different numbering for the Japan-market models, but those were essentially the same as the export models. Very decent DD TTs, that are less well-appreciated than many more famous ones, and therefore usually more affordable when you can find them. Try transplanting one into a more solid, massive plinth, compare it with most TTs out there (mid-fi and modern) and you'll be surprised and grinning! :music:

Congratulations on finding a good TT that you like. Enjoy it! :thmbsp:

Yes shhhhhhhhhhh I bought a HK T60 about 2 yrs ago and paid $120 since then I have seen alot of chatter bout this TT and now they go for $250-$350
