Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

Question - I am currently running my Ewave set up with the selenium d210ti driver and the hm-25 horn( I already had a set). I have the pyle horn recomended on order. Will there be an improvement with the pyle horn? I think it sound very good now, I just as soon cancel that horn if mine is a close equivalent.
That horn is an exponential. You'll be missing one of the defining principles of eWave -- constant directivity. Get the right waveguides.... :yes:

I get the feeling I might be fighting a losing battle here with the Mac and speaker software....
If all you want to do is measure response, FuzzMeasure will do that on Mac, according to Skywave. Upgrade to full functionality is $150, tho.

You should be able to find a used PC for that, and HOLMImpulse is free.... :dunno:

Thanks Zilch. PE is expecting them on the 22nd - it kind of stalls my prooduction - but oh well. Just go spin some vinyl and wait.

I would like to be able to use speaker design software as well as measurement software. Most of the time I just need to know box/port dimensions for a given driver, but I would love to be able to test what I have made for final tweaking.:smoke:
 
Just ask around. More than a few folks have a functional windows box that they will give to someone that will use it. Of course you will have to suffer the indignity of admitting that an obsolete PC is better than your Mac :D :yes:

You can safely skip page 1 since it's mostly the typical pc/mac back and forth that has plagued the net since the beginning of time.

Still listening to the Ewaved DQ-10s with DE250/QSC and refoamed Advent woofers. So far no angry mobs have laid siege to the house for my disrespect of The World's One Perfect Speaker. This sounds outstanding. I may actually resist the people who keep asking 'What are you going to do with those when you're done?" These could be real keepers, although I always say that. I'm using the stock ewave XO and holding off on final XO fabrication until the brains have sussed out the details.
I haven't touched a speaker project in 10 days. I'm still buried in the chip amp project article with 4 days to go until deadline. So much metal to cut, so little time. I Ncase anyone wonders why I don't answer the phone, I assembled a PCB the size of a business card with 30 components, 75 solder joints, 12 jumpers and one serious mistake that made it explode. All because I took a call at the bench and got a polarity wrong. Blew 6 hours' work. So I'll be scarce until Tuesday.

Hi everyone,
I built the econowave out of my Large Advents a while back and am Very Happy with them. Now I have the opportunity to get another pair of Large Advents.
My question is with the Selenium D220Ti-OMF-8 and Selenium Horn Adapter used with the Pyle PH612.

Can I expect the same results as my original build (Ex. Screw on driver vs bolt on adapter driver)?

The throat adapters used on that WG alter the measured and audible performance. Better to stick to screw-on.

I've now built 4 of this board, and due to errors I still lack a full set of process photos. I'm reverse-engineering the metalwork now to make mechanical drawings of the hole patterns. Thank God for the weekend. I might actually get this done on time.

See the current state of mine- in the throat there is a wedge of 30 ppi reticulated foam (a la geddes) and the outside "foam frame" is made of open-cell laptop packing foam. The idea, naturally, is to damp edge diffraction of the mouth, and this is accomplished both by the beveled profile and the lossy nature of the foam.

I'll try to get measures up soonish but I'm still working on XO optimization.
Okay, so a rough measure showed 1.5 and 1.2 dB of reduction on the twin peaks at around 1300 and 2600 respectively, and a smoother trending behavior resulted. For some installs with a highly refined lowpass and smooth response through the crossover, it might create an on-axis dip.

But to me, smoothing this region is highly desirable and can be applied to the system with only minimal reoptimization.

Not sure what PRX KDT stands for but, if that's a plot of simulated response vs. actual test measurement then I would say that Mr. Bagby has some very impressive software .

PRX is the JBL horn from MRX/PRX series.

KDT is Parts Express $64 knocked-down trapezoidal cabinet kit:

Question for you folks.
What is the difference between "constant radiation" and "direct radiation" horns? I suspect there is some difference besides marketing terms, but I have no idea.

Thoughts?

Pyle calls the PH-612 "constant radiation," and I consider their operative description of what that means to be synonymous with constant directivity. I suspect it was part of an agreement for them to sell them that they not call them what they are, or, if there was no agreement, part of a rationale for arguing non-infringement, should the necessity arise.

Closest I could guess on "direct radiation horn" would be a horn-loaded direct radiator. :dunno:

I've read that it is absolutely necessary to flush-mount the WG in the baffle. I've also read the the WG forces the sound out from the baffle in such a way that flush mounting and BSC is unnecessary.

Any insight?
 
Flush mounting is not likely a major issue for the WG. The frequencies at which it would be significant are already extremely controlled in their pattern by the time they hit the end of the horn. We're talking 5kHz+. Now, smoothing the transition at the end of the horn, going into freespace, either with the application of some bullnose or foam as I've shown potentially has a lot of benefit at lower frequencies, the 1-3kHz range.
