Soundcraftsmen A5002??? WTF??? Help please!

Soundcraftsmen A5002

I was helping a relative move, saw a big black metal electronic box in her garage: "Does that go?" I asked.

She said: "Yeah, to the dump! It was (we'll call him 'Mr. X' here, her X)"

So to my home it came. From intital seaches I've determined it might not be a piece of junk but maybe a vintage amp of some type. I 've always had "good" stereo stuff but never any "rack" stuff like this.

My questions are: What is this, how do I check it out to see if it works? How would one use this?

Can I use what I have here to connect to it to determine if it should really go to the trash?

The stuff I have: Sony STR-6200F, STR-6065 (2) have saved them from the old days when I was rich; Sony STR-AV950, Sony TCR-503 (tape), CDP-203, H-K FL-8400 CD players, and a Marantz 2215b. And some Pioneer speakers and Infinity SM-120s too.

Can/will any of my junk be connected to see if this A5002 will work? How do I use the A5002 also????

Thanks for any help.

Are you referring to a "Soundcraftsmen" A5002?

Got a pic?

A pic or more specific/accurate description of what you have will be necessary.

Don't shitcan it.That is a bigass power amp over 250 wpc into a 8 ohm load.

does it look like this?

A highly respected beast, at some point i've owned and enjoyed several versions of the 5002. There's a few fellas here who are well versed in them, follow any advice they offer.

If your Marantz has pre-out/main-in jumpers .You can use the pre-amp section of the Marantz to drive the soundcraftsmen.

Soundcraftsmen A5002 Pics

Here's the pics

How do i test this?

My Marantnz is at the electronic guys getting cleaned right now, it'll be a couple of weeks before I get it back. Any way to check it now?

Man, my relatives and friends are completely worthless when it comes to things like this!

Tame that beast.:thmbsp:

What can I do with it? I don't want to have to get a whole new bunch of stuff just to use it? If that's the case I'd rather trade it off for something.

Your Sony STR-6200F http://www.thevintageknob.org/SONY/sonyvault/STR6200F/STR6200F.html has a Line Out jack (1/4 stereo) on the front panel, near the power switch, just on top of the phone plug. I may be wrong (I don't have the service manual for this one) but I think this is a preamp-out jack, or an output taken from the power amplifier signal but reduced with a resistive network in such a way to be at line level (~100mV). With an "1/4 male stereo to 2 RCA male" adaptor you can feed the Soundcraftsmen power amplifier.

The level may be weak for the Soundcraftsmen. If so, you may try the phone output.

Dont worry. You can use the amp with any preamp and you can hook up your tuner, turntable cd ect into whatever preamp you use. your over the biggest financial hurdle by having the amp, I`m pretty certain the preamp to match or any decent preamp could be had for around 100 buck.

I have a 1/4 male x (2) RCAs, so just put each of the RCAs to each Channel A & B on the A5002, the 1/4 male to the 6200F "Line Out" or "Headphone" jack, then hook up my speakers and see what happens? That's it . . . for now?

It looked like it had RCA`s but if it is the 1/4 inch then use the 1/4 inch to RCA and thats it, channel A and B is the same as left and right(in case you didnt know). Run from the RCA to the preamp and thats that.

The 1/4 male must be stereo

Before hooking up your speakers on the A5002, check for DC offset at the output, just in case.

Feed the signal from the 1/4 line out to your tape deck to see if this signal is controled by the volume on the 6200F (the phone output is certainly controled by the volume). Important precaution because if this signal is at constant standard line-out level, you will likely drive your amp at loud level (250W per channel may be loud!).

Start with the input level controls on the Soundcraftsmen turned all the way down at first to avoid this potential "full throttle" situation.

YIKES!!! Thanks pal! I was just getting ready to fire it all up . . . But I'll do the tape deck thing first, liike you suggest. Thanks again.

Wow, great find! Yer going to like it... :thmbsp:

Yeah . . . but if it don't do nothing then I got a nice boat anchor.

I can't even find anyone around here to clean up and spiff up my old Marantz and Sony receivers let alone work on something like this big heavy thing.

I just left my Marantnz 2215b with a guy who told me he "MAY be able to clean/fix/adjust it"

If the A5002 doesn't work, well then what?

PS: BTW, if any of you guys had some old stuff like my STR-6200F, STR-6065, etc . . . . who would you send it to for complete cleaning/tune-ups/adjustments, etc???

I owned that model a few years back and it worked fine until I sold it to a friend who abused the hell out of it. He ended up blowing both channels (what a pud).

First check the power fuse to make sure it isn't blown (blackened). If the fuse is blown or blackened, it has a high probability that one or more of the output transistors is shorted. If the fuse is ok, don't worry, its not gonna explode or smoke or anything so drastic, just plug it in, turn it on and see if the LED power indicators work. They will usually jump sometimes to the extreme right, and then settle back to the left position.

If it does this, its probably ok and you have a lucky find there, but before you connect any speakers to it, have someone else check it for you so you don't blow your speakers. Reading your post, it sounds like you are not comfortable in doing checks youself, so have someone else check it for you!

Hang on to that puppy! I wish I hadn't sold mine! :tears:
