Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

I was looking at the same thing (8"woofer)

Before going for the Silver Fulte (looks nice!)
How about one of these three budget options?

-Pioneer B20GR30-51F
-Goldwood GW-8PC-30-8
-HiVi M8N

Or what about this Pioneer B20? Yeah it's a full ranger, but take the whizzer cone off and you'll have a very nice 8" woofer for only $19. Currently many builds are using a piezo tweeter for the higher end, but a CD/WG combo for mids and highs while B20 providing lows may just be a winner.

Anyone ever thought about using the $27 Eminence 1" titanium horn driver as a CD in the Econowave model? :scratch2:

Hi,

I am trying to improve the polar response of my dipole loudspeakers. I am planning to replace the dome tweeters with waveguide+CD combo.

From reading, it seems PH612 + Selenium D220Ti-8 is a proven combination in terms of desired horizontal and vertical polar response.

Is Selenium D220Ti-8 + One of those 10" or 8" waveguide a good combination as well?

Thanks!

the larger round WGs create quite a center to center spacing and regardless of XO point, create some pretty nasty vertical response issues. There's a nice WG from RCF that would fit that baffle and mate up smoothly to to the Seas L woofer. Check PE's sit..i beleive it's the 101. Works pretty nicely with the B&C non metal diaphram drivers.

The problem with the round waveguides is that they increase the center-to-center distance between the woofer and waveguide, narrowing the height of the forward vertical lobe. Also, the higher the crossover frequency at any given C/C distance, the shorter the usable lobe.

If you are crossed up around 2 kHz, I'd be looking at replacing your tweets with the 6" square eWaveguide:

Thanks for your expert advise. I have discarded the round WG now (pity they look visually nice).

The crossover point is 1.5khz LR4 acoustic and I cannot go any higher. I'm already pushing that metal cone Seas to its limit.

Guess I have to make my baffle 2cm wider to accommodate the PH612 WG.

Plus, as a bonus having the PH612 will allow me to build a box horn system. I'm keen to explore its sonic and reputation for dynamics (which OBs are not known for).

Squaring a circle, or Recessing a Squircle...

I've been working on fitting the 8X8 waveguide and a pair of LE-10A's together, here's how far along I am. The boxes (off CL) were University something or other that had been parted out. I cut the baffle out and made new ones a few months back. I finally spent last weekend with my router and figured out how to make a pattern so I could recess the LE-10A's. Pic is the result.

My question is about this XO:

It appears that the 4X woofer is a lot less sensitive than the JBL's I;m planning on using, so I'm guessing that the HF side will need a little tweaking, creating a high efficiency version if you will. Has anyone done this?

I plan on trying this out with the standard Ewave LF section as a starting point, we'll see if that works out...

It's R1, R2, and C3 that establish the attenuation. There is a group of posts early in this thread documenting a dialog between Wayne and myself in which he presented a list of components for a range of attenuations, and I tried them all out and posted the resulting array of curves. From that, you should be able to extrapolate where you need to go with this....

The Dayton has a WICKED breakup mode that would require almost as much in XO components to get where it needs to be as the cost of the driver itselt.....skip it.

The Selenium and the Eminence both have the needed eff and power handling to get the job done, but are very low freq limited....which is OK for surriound duty.

A woofer that does both and is pretty cheap is the Silver Flute W20RC38

https://www.madisound.com/store/product_info.php?cPath=45_228_257&products_id=848

Does really well on the bass side as well in a small ported box. Pretty efficient at 91db and a smoothe 'papery' response to reach up to the Ewave CD combo.

There's also some work over at PE on the Ewave mini and other threads using these Klipsch 6.5" buyout woofers. One member is doing a parallel pair on the horizontal below the 152/220i combo that would make for an excellent surround, but you gotta hurry as the sale on these ends 11/15

Zaph was kind enough to test them for us and posted the results on his site.

Zilch has got the breakup squashed pretty effectively to work at 2.2khz.....and would be even easier at 1.6hz.

Wow, those Klipsch speakers are tempting. Do you have a link to the thread discussing the dual 6.5" speaker design? The price is definitely right! If they can make it work it might be a winner.

I need to know if they are confident in the design before I drop some money on 8 Klipsch drivers! Even if they are cheap.

Unfortunatley Greg, the last 5 units were sold today....they're gone!

The silver flute constitutes an excellent value for an 8" driver as well.

Here's a link to the WG i eluded to earlier. I had some Polars and directivity maps from a French DIY thread/forum that looked fantastic but hence the link doesn't work anymore.

This lens isn't very deep, so no offset needed and should get to 1.5khz no problem with the B&C DE250

294-800_s.jpg

And probobly the best option for your baffle layout but also quite expensive is the XT1086......Now that's a waveguide!

http://www.loudspeakersplus.com/product/XT1086/18-SOUNDXT1086/

But $88......Ouch!

XT1086.jpg

It's smaller cousin the XT120 is still available for only $27.....but it won't quite hold directivity below 2khz so i guess that's out.

Darn! They still show up as in stock and my order went through. :D

If they show up I will see what the fuss is about...if it gets cancelled I will try out the Silver Flutes.

Thanks guys.

Comparing the Klipsch woofers to the Silver Flutes in WinISD shows that the one Silver Flute should give greater output than even a pair of Klipsch woofers and there is no breakup to deal with as with the Klipsch drivers. Also a pair of Klipsch costs nearly the same as one Silver Flute anyway.

Well...maybe I buy a Silver Flute and do a comparo??
