AR-4x replacement tweeters?

So, I have a woofer-only pair of AR-4x speakers. The tweeters are done - no continuity on the ohm meter. Are there any good non-AR replacement tweeters? I know some people will tell me to keep it stock & get a set of original tweeters - which I'll do if I absolutely have to.

Did you look carefully at them? IIRC, somebody here on AK "rescued" an AR piece (tweeter, mid?) by finding and repairing a break in the tiny wires used to connect it.

Aage - the tweeters in the 4x are pretty generic-looking cone jobbies with standard spade terminals on the back. They're prolly dead. I'd offer up the ones I have, but fotno would kill me :D . - Mark

Trusting my memory rather than looking at www.classicspeakerpages.net but... I think they're not so generic. I think they ARE pretty similar to the cones used in the lower-end AR models of the Teledyne era (which were actually pretty nice). Sort of a cone-dome hybrid. See the AR-18 manual scan attached.

If the tweeter you need looks like this, look for an AR-17 or AR-18 (or other cone tweetered AR's). You may find a single one cheap, or free.

If the tweeter's different: sorry for the misleading info :-(

Tom, I'd keep my eye peeled on ePay (or better yet) put a wanted ad up here, the likelyhood is someone will have a pair they've robbed out of a rotten cabinet before too long. I just checked ePay and nothing is up at the moment, and I don't think I've seen any up for sale here, but don't take my word for that, I'd check and double check just to make sure. They will turn up, AR made a ton of 4x's.

Mark, I wouldn't kill you, I'd just cry... for a really long time :)

mrh - Perhaps not a generic tweeter, but pretty generic looking and it is a cone - not like that shown in your pic. I have a pair of 4x's "back at the ranch". I'll post a pic tonight. - Mark

Yah, I went back and looked at classicspeakerpages and saw the error of my ways. Teh AR-6 and/or AR-7 had a tweeter like the later AR-17 and AR-18.

I should delete the prior post but I like the picture of the AR-18... a nice, cheap little speaker if there ever was one!

Another fried egg tweeter. Wonder what the x-over frequency is. Could you sub an Advent fried egg tweeter?

If I'm not mistaken, the original Advent tweeter crossed over at around 1200hz so it could prolly be used in most any speaker safely. Not sure if this applies to the second generation tweeter or not. Actually, I'm not absolutely sure about any of this. I'm not helping, am I. :worried: - Mark

Just today I bought a set of almost mint AR-4's and I have not even taken them out of the Blazer yet. The crossover freq is 1200 Hz and that is low for that 2.5 inch speaker. If mine are bad here is what I will use ,Pioneer 2.5 inch 40 watts RMS #270-034, from Parts express and they cost $ 4.35 each. I used these as replacement speakers in my AR-2 that had 4 inch mid tweets in them .Pioneer use to sell this speaker as a mid tweet. I have two of them wired in parallel in the AR-2 and have pushed them hard with over 300 WPC. I also got a set of AR-srt 220 today. Does any one have any info on them.

Well I got my AR-4x fired up and my tweeters are good. Dirty pots like all AR'e BUt here is the big suprise the 8 inch woofers have cloth Surrounds.I thought all AR had converted to foam by the AR-4's They have one inch voice coils not 1/2 inch like my AR-7's The two wooferas are nothing alike but neither speaker ever had the grill removed. I will post pictures if any one wants to see them.

Ed, the 4x's I have here have cloth surrounds, as well. I tried to post a pic of that tweeter, but the file was too big. I'd like to see some pics of yours. What do you mean the "two wooferas :D are nothing alike? - Mark

Mark Here are some pictures of the two AR-4 's that I got this week. One picture is the two of them side by side. Then each woofer and then with my AR-7 on top.The AR-7 looks large because it is closer to the lens. The brown speaker is #334589 the black is a lot older and it is #123171.I don't believe the grill has ever been of the black one and it is a lot older. The voice coil leads are closer together on the black one and the cone is not the same. The AR-7 woofer is almost identical to the Black AR-4 except it has a 3/4 inch voice coil. All three have cloth surrounds.I added the tweeter to the AR-7 as it was burned up.The AR-4 sound very good for such small speakers.
Ed "Edit" I lost two images some where but these two show what I am talking about.
