Tornado destroyed large chunk of Joplin, MO

Looks like 1/2 to 1/3 of Joplin was destroyed. Population 50,000. Two floors of a major hospital are gone, along with a high school and lots and lots of homes and businesses.

We have family there, their home was hit and he broke his leg. Their parents headed down to help them and I'll know more tomorrow.

We have AK members in that area - sure hope they are OK and will check in with us.....

This is a town 45 minutes away from me. My best friend lost his house, but thankfully he was in Flordia. I texted Steve, www.records off here to see if he was ok, but no response, but I hear cell phone reception is no good there so say a prayer for Steve, his family and everyone else affected by this nasty storm.

Praying for all those affected by this Nasty weather. I too have relatives down there.

I'll say a prayer for everyone there. Hopefully it's pretty much all property damage, & not worse.

I bet the Internet servics are in a shambles down there, so it could be days before we hear from some of em.

Thanks ALLtrack I sent a pm to Steve last night just hoping he was safe.
I wish I could help more than just pray for them.

Just received a reply from my text. His house is gone but he and his family are ok.

I finally got in touch with him this morning, apparently pretty much everything around them is completely gone. Cell phone service was a shambles last night.

Joplin's city manager is saying that 25-30% of the city is wiped out. Latest reports are 89 confirmed dead, judging by the pictures of the city they'll be very lucky if that number doesn't get much higher. My thoughts are with everyone affected by this disaster. :sigh:

We heard from our family. It is our cousin's daughter and son in law who live in Joplin. They lived about 1/2 mile from the hospital. They were apparently thrown from their home. He has a compound fracture of his leg and has had two surgeries. She has many facial fractures, a broken jaw and needs plastic surgery on her lip. They were transferred to a hospital in Arkansas for treatment. They are young, have only been out of college a couple of years and married for 2 years. They are both schoolteachers in that area.

Our cousins left KC at 7:15 last night to drive down there but were not able to find them until 3:00 a.m. this morning. I can not imagine their terror (the kids or the parents).

Their home is gone. I am asking what the relatives can do to help. I will probably purchase some gift cards to stores to help them replace clothing or belongings.

What a terrible nightmare this must be for all of those affected. We always believe "it will never happen to me".

So sorry to hear of your family member's injuries, Darcy.

Sending a prayer to all who are affected by this terrible tragedy.

We are safe and staying at my oldest sons house. Our house is 100% GONE. The only thing left is the bathtub my wife, 1 year old granddaughter and myself were in. When you look at the worst of the photos, that is what our area looks like. They are searching home to home for survivors and dead an area 15 blocks wide and 6 miles long. They have already confirmed 89 dead and the search has just begun. Absolutely beyond anything I could ever imagine.

Center75, I am glad to hear your family is safe.

We are having another storm move through right now and I just heard on the police radio that a funnel cloud was just spotted at 15th and Main and we are getting 70mileswind and quarter sze hail. Not good for search and rescue!!

Thank you for your thoughts and prayers. Please keep them coming.

Thanks to Sam and Justin for letting everyone know we survived.

Love to all!!

Glad you and yours made it through alive wwwrecords. Real sorry to hear about your home being destroyed. But you and your family are what's important.

Darcy I hope your relatives recover quickly!

My wife's from Joplin. She has two sisters there, and some cousins, nephews, etc there too.

We spent last night and early this morning trying to get a hold of them.

Finally was able to text one sister. (cell text will work when voice won't many times.)

A brother was able to get in touch with the other sister that lives near the Wal-mart that was flattened. Apparently there were some deaths there.

Sounds like most of our relatives are OK, but with some property damage....but weren't in direct path of tornado.

I've been there many times to visit relatives, and have driven by the hospital shown in the TV pictures. The hospital is recognizable....but the neighborhood around it.....it completely gone !.....for blocks and blocks.

90 killed so far.
