Three turntable afternoon

I didn't start out to acquire three turntables this afternoon ... I was actually going to pick up a Sansui AU-7500 amp.

... then the fellow pulls out his dad's old turntable - a JVC ql-y55f. No dustcover, just the straight tonearm and the base of the tonearm rest is broken but the rest seems to be in very good condition and best of all I plug it in and the arm works. Grado Ft+ cartridge. $20.

... then I do a really stupid thing and stop at one of my favourite used vinyl stores and somehow walk out with a Dual 701 and a Pro-Linear AT-1600 (A CEC-built turntable sold in the mid-70's by Pro-Linear of Vancouver, BC). The Dual has a Shure Realistic R25XT and the Pro-Linear (in it's nice teak case) has some cartridge I don't recognize. Both in very nice condition. $20 each.

And I did get the AU-7500 as well. I'm going to need more storage room!

I know what it feels like. I came home with 3 yesterday as well though 2 of them are repairs...oops....I came home with 4, 3 being repairs!

Technics SL-1300 for me, a Dual CS-514 and a 502 plus a Lenco (L70?) to work on. The 2 Duals look like easy jobs and I even think I have the V blocks the Lenco needs so I can get them out of the way soon. I need the space too.

Great find on that JVC and at 20 dollars you as they put it got a major SCORE...............:banana:

So now I have 3 JVC's - A QL-A7, a QL-Y3F and this one. Haven't gotten the arm working yet on the Y3F.
 
By the way, the 701 is the same turntable model that my father-in-law purchased back in '74 with the AU-7700, TU-7700, Pro-Linear speakers and Akai R2R. I have of course the Sansui stuff & he has kept the Akai. He chucked the 701 into the trash bin a few years ago. So it's kind of cool to have one. I have the original manual as well from my father-in-law's unit.

So I guess I'll have to find something to match up with the Pro-Linear speakers and the Pro-Linear turntable.
 
That QL Y55F is a major score, I mean a real whopper (not in the Burger King sense), a doozie.

Simply unheard of.

A TT that will cause you to marvel. DD with MC capability. Superb piece of engineering.

Yup, I'll post some pictures shortly.

The Grado on the JVC is actually a GF1 and the stylus on the Shure is toasted.
 
Cleaned up the QL-Y55F. Here are some pictures:

Note the interim tonearm rest via suction cup and a rest from some mid-80's BPC turntable.

She's working ... and sounding very nice - even with the old Grado on it & some $1 thrift store vinyl.

Would be nice to know from someone who has one of these what the height of the tonearm rest is above the cantilever support base (that is sheared off on mine). I think I could make up a new base with something that would look good - aluminum or smoked acrylic or even perhaps a small chunk of rosewood. The actual rest might be a bit more difficult since it is supposed to go around the collar where the tonearm connects (not tonearm itself) so when you remove the tonearm the tonearm pivot assemlbly is held firmly.

Otherwise the turntable seems to be in pretty good shape. A few scratches and a ding in the laminate at the lower right front of the plinth (can't see it on the pictures).

And boy ... that is one big dust cover on these things - even the cover from my QL-A7 is too small for it.
 
Crap, man! You've got the inside track on too many thrift stores don't you?

I NEVER see tables like that JVC over here.
 
The JVC was a private sale - one of these "... by the way I've got this turntable in the closet" type of things.

... I did pay pretty good $ for the AU-7500 I originally went there for ... $80.

The Dual and the Pro-Linear were from a local used vinyl store.

Ok I grant you that I am developing some inside connections too though not at the thrifts either. I have fixed up several tables for a local record store recently and they ALMOST gave me a Lenco the other day.

$20 for a 701 working, in nice shape, w/ dustcover! Holy record deal, Batman! SCORE BIG TIME!!! What a great table. When th elocal used record store here finally had a table I would actually want, they were liquidating because they are going out of.business, an dit took 2 weeks for me to get them down to $150 for a.nice condition Revox B791, with a V15-V, that needed the caps replaced, an dI thought I got a great deal. I once got a Dual 1219 sans dust.cover with a V15-II, that needed mechanism work, for $10, but that was a once in a lifetime luck out, as they were carrying it in to the room while I was standing there. That same thrift no longer carries records or tapes, now! They said , " they were too much work, and took up too much room, for the amount they brought in" . They made a deal witha different used record store, that takes everything they get, for a set price.

I just measured mine for you. The tone arm rest is 4cm from the rosewood base to the part where the tone arm sits. Mine is the QL-Y55F as well.

Is that the info you needed?
 
Thanks. I'm not near mine at the moment, but doesn't the arm rest go up and down with the VTA adjustment? So the 4cm would change depending on what the arm height is set to?
 
I was looking for some parts to complete the JVC and got an offer from a fellow in Vancouver with a near pristine and complete QL-Y55f that has a dead speed control IC. Says he's been looking for the part for ages.

He was agonizing over selling off the table for parts so I decided to spread some karma and I'm working a deal with him to sell him mine, at my cost. (How's that for role reversal!)

Seems like a straight-up fellow who wasn't going to strip the tables to sell individual pieces off on ebay and frankly I'd probably sell mine off if I got it all fixed up.
