At the semi-annual NEARC antique radio swapmeet (www.nearc.net)... for a few bucks, I couldn't pass it up.

I remember these, but I'd never seen one in the flesh.

I did manage to resist the temptation to buy yet another Sherwood S-3000, in pretty good condition, being offered at $40 OBO. This one was a II or a III... and I don't have either of those versions... but even I, occasionally, can exercise a little self-restraint.

Very cool. I'd like to add it to the antenna pix thread. I try to avoid "web" photos and just show stuff that AK'ers actually own and use. On the other hand I'm not quite so scrupulous when it comes to stealing other people's pets for avatars. :D Anyhoo please post pic of this when it's deployed.
 
I wonder if that works better than some of today's Terk amplified units.

Very cool vintage piece! Let us know how it well it works.

Hey, Harpo wasn't even my pet! He was just a boarder for a couple of years while his mistress was in pet-unfriendly campus housing! ;-)

Have aliens contacted you yet? Looks like it would do that well the way it looks. Yipes!!!, one sold on Ebay a year ago for $280.00.

How well does it work, you ask. You got me! It needs two 9V batteries to operate its built in amplifier - and I cannot find any farking 9V batteries in the house :-p

We always have 9V batteries -- well, almost always.

It doesn't really seem worthwhile to try it as a passive antenna, so a live test will have to wait 'til at least tomorrow.

Hope that's a North American spec version... looked like the linked page had it as a 76 to 90 MHz antenna, presumably for the Japanese market. Sure looks cool though.

Yes it is an 88 to 108 MHz version - which can be (barely) observed in the photo I attached to post #7.

Spent today working in/on the garden (and dealing with some overnight bear vandalism of bird feeders) -- tomorrow I'm picking up some 9V batteries :-)
 
If the bear taggers tag your place, oven cleaner usually works- Nothing worse than bears with spray paint. :D
 
I had that Technics "Wing" antenna for several years when I lived in DC - suburban Maryland. Tuner was a rare and under-appreciated Aiwa AT-9700u which combined first rate sonics with excellent sensitivity and selectivity. Frankly, the wing antenna sucked compared to rabbit ears or a DIY omnidirectional I built from an Audio magazine article in the early 80's. Cool looking device, but useless in real world use.
 
That's the most likely outcome - I have a pretty motley collection of indoor amplified FM antennae. The tuned ones actually do OK (even here, out in mid-nowhere) actually - but of course, one cannot beat altitude for any antenna.
