The 19s are very nice but

Not intended as a damper, just as a point of discussion.
No problem, I agree in a way, Im using the Stones as the rears to the 19s, but I had to get the other 4, just couldnt pass em up..... :thmbsp: SOON I WILL have another pr of 19s or the Stonehendge 3s ( maybe by this weekend) I just love ALTECS and its rare to see 6 like that together, so I just thought id post a couple pics :D IF I get the Stone 3s, I WILL make a little stonehendge circle and take some pics...LOL just for kicks and grins :banana: that being said..... the Stone 1s sound very nice and smoth, the JBL 4312 has a lot more PUNCH, My HPM 100s, have a little more mid, but none compare to the Altec 19s.....

MJ----Those Stonehenge cabinets would be very nice to base a DIY traditional Altec speaker on; say a 414 woofer and a model 3000 tweeter or that 12" coax Altec made. Or a 12" Tannoy. :thmbsp:

I have tried my EV PRO 12B coaxials in the Stonehenge cabinet. Kind of a mini Stonehenge III. I am very surprised and happy with the results. Just hate to cut up a good cabinet to achieve the woofer placement and asthetics I want.

MJ, I think we're going to enroll you in ALA!! Altec Lansing Anonymous!!! I've been a long standing member, luckily my wife loves Altecs!! You know you have too many when they overflow into your classic car for storage, here's my Vista Cruiser this morning;

Thanks for the comments. You guys must have really big rooms for those 19's. They would never fit in my house. There are a pair of 19's for sale locally for $1,200 that dgwojo gave me the scoop on a while back. They look pretty clean but my wife would kill me if I brough them home. :yes: Maybe one of these days. But the Stonehenges would fit in my room. Not that I know what it is but are the Stonehenges a fair representation of the Altec sound?

"Not that I know what it is but are the Stonehenges a fair representation of the Altec sound?"

I don't think so, not regarding the two small Stonehenges. Altec sound is marked by a big, effortless upper bass and midrange with excellent dynamics, as I said earlier the smallest Altecs IMO&E that offer these virtues are the Bolero and Madera, the reason being that the use the model 406 woofer with it's 3" coil and the motor from the 414. The 406 was carefully designed to match tonally with the big Altecs and give the best dynamics possible with a 10" driver, thus the 406's unique dual cone profile (first straight-sided near the center, then concave towards the edge), big pro-sound motor and corrugated surround.

Of course the big Stonehenge with the model 604 driver (Stonehenge III) is totally Altec, definitive you could say.

LIVING PROOF THAT WE HAVE CREATED A MONSTER AND IT IS ALL RUSS'S FAULT!

I do remember a while back when Russ parked his 19s at your house till he could come for them.

Now you are amassing a freaking Altec Museum of your own.

Nice going Clem! They look like some very nice little fellas too.

Yeah, I guess it is my fault. Even I am astounded at the collection Mikey has amassed and he ain't done yet either! Hell, he's even always tryin' to get me to give up MY Altecs. Ain't gonna happen though .Years ago I used to tell Mike about all the wonderful large format Altec systems and he just pretty much ignored me until he heard mine. These days I tell him that although I prefer the model 19 Altec for sentimental reasons, the JBL L-300 is a much better system overall and he pretty much ignores me on THAT! Well, someday he'll hear an L-300 system and the process will repeat itself :D

As for the sound of the little Stonehenges, I think they are great speakers...a bit harsh at very loud levels...but I think they definetly exihibit the distinctive (or infamous) JBL/Altec "westcoast" sound. A very punchy mid-bass. When I was at Mikes house picking up my model 19's he ran his single (at THAT time), pair of Stonehenges through his Sansui G8K, and I swear they reminded me of the old JBL L-100 sound. I removed the 12' woofer and it looks like a mini 416-8b except it has no magnet cover. The tweeters have a HUGE magnet assembly for such a small driver. Very robust well made cabinets.

Agree with Tom Brennan, the Stonehenge 3 is the ULTIMATE in the Stonehenge series. The 604-8G/H is to die for :thmbsp:

I can relate to the Altec Stonehenge score...not as many and missing some original equipment. Have fun with yours. I haven't set mine up in the downstairs home theater yet, because I have finished building the downstairs home theater :).
