SX-1250 Glass Dimensions anyone?

High on resolution.
I had an accident. I had a 1250 fall; landed on the tuning knob. Bent the shaft a little; but more importantly is it totally destroyed the glass.

My first instinct, after a few expletives; was to gather the broken shards and try to reassemble them; having a glass shop use it as a template. Well, there's a problem with that. Apparently when it hit the tuning knob. that caused the area around the hole to shatter in to dust. I carefully swept the area; and saw lots of little flecks of glass in the pile.

There's not enough there to piece together.

I don't want to go paying ebay prices for this...and I can't reassemble the old one. Does anyone have the dimensions I can take to a glass shop and have one cut? The outer dimensions aren't too much of a problem; it's the diameter of the hole and it's exact location that are causing hangups.

Okay, just happen to have one open 2 5/8" X 18 1/4" The hole diameter is 11/16" it is centered across the short dimension and about 1 1/2 inches from the edge of the glass to the edge of the hole (about 16 1/16 from the other end of the glass to the other edge of the hole). Being from Japan, these are probably made in nominally metric sizes which explains the "about" (approximate) in my measurements.
 
Thanks. I'd come up with about 18/32" for the hole diameter.

I don't think the diameter is as important as it's exact position. I may have to create a cardboard template; come up with something as close as I can; and hope it works.

the price he charges for those he makes is reasonable considering cost of materials and the labor of drilling the hole.

I seriously think a glass shop will cost more than him. I haven't found one in my area, to even compare...

He is looking into doing a sx-1010 glass for me. It has a larger hole.

I sent dimensions the way I did because I didn't want to guess where exact center is. The knob shaft is only 1/4". A 3/4" hole is only 1/16" larger in diameter than what I measured- leaving 1/4" open all the way around the shaft. The knob is plenty large to cover it. I can give exact dimensions measured with a micrometer if you'd like: Hole diameter is .7115 in. (18.07 mm) edge of glass to edge of hole is 1.501 in. or 2.2125 from edge of glass to hole center.:yes:
The hole is centered across the short dimension.
 
I have cut holes in the glass for 3 or 4 pioneer receivers using a Dremel tool and a small diamond coated hole saw that I bought at Harbor Freight for about $3. Go slow and lubricate with water. Takes about 5 minutes to get thru.

I saw those last night. That's not too horrible of a price considering the shipping is free. I've got a couple of places I'm going to check with locally for a price.

I have cut holes in the glass for 3 or 4 pioneer receivers using a Dremel tool and a small diamond coated hole saw that I bought at Harbor Freight for about $3.

I've heard it's pretty easy; a quick look shows it's not entirely difficult either. I'm going by Harbor Fright this week; so I might pick this up and see about doing it myself.
 
There is a guy selling glass on Ebay for several different SX models. I had bought one for my 1250. It fit perfectly for $20.00 shipping included. No affiliation. There's no way you could do it cheaper. Frankly he is doing it for the cause at that price.

Drilling glass is an art, that requires patience and a light touch. It's possible, although it may take a few tries while experience is gained, I think he's already "paid his dues" in a commercial environment.
PLUS, It's TINTED glass!!!

I did a replacement for a 450. The hole was relatively easy. Position is not highly critical. I knew I had gone slightly off (no obvious jokes, please) but it didn't seem as much of a problem when I pulled knobs on some other Pioneers I have to reveal that almost all of them are off a bit, straight out of factory assembly.

The glass sellers Handel is "colormesound". He will cut the 1250 glass and in what tint you want. I would contact him through the messaging system directly. I notice he charges extra for the tinted glass.

Yes doing it for the love of Pioneer and you who also love vintage audio. My name is Rick and I live in Minnenoplace, MN. eBay name colormesound. One day I needed a replacement glass for a Pioneer SX-1250. The glass cost a buck to be cut to size by a friend of mine who owns a hardware store. I worked for him for a few years as a teenager, learned to cut glass, I was horrible at first but learned the technic. When I bought the pre cut glass I checked 5 different glass shops, to drill a hole would cost me $40 a hole minimum. I ordered 1 and the job was awful. Chipped and scratched around the hole. Granted the chips could not be seen because the large tuner knob covered the chips but the scratches were seen outside the tuner knob. I bought two cut glasses for my beloved SX-1250. I tried the hole saws and they suck, jump around and busted the first piece of glass. I bought two more cut glass piece's and $80 worth of bits for glass and ceramics. These bits are good for about 15-18 holes. Then the drill time goes from 10 minutes to 20 minutes for 1 hole. Yeah I tryed water, oil, silicone spray, synthetic oil as a lubricant putting a bead of caulk around the drill point to hold the lubricants in place and the drill time took 30-40 minutes. Drill them dry at about 500 rpms and with new bits it takes from 10-12 minutes using a 1/8 inch pilot hole, 1/4 inch, then 1/2 inch and finally a 5/8 inch bite. Do not use cheap glass or ceramic hole saws from hardware stores or above mentioned stores, they are not round or true and rip the glass apart, aka China bits. I will continue to try new things to make this a faster and more economical process. The smoked glass I sell for a custom look costs me $4.77 each, they are thicker and have beveled edges, better craftsmanship and 8 mm thicker. That means I can apply more pressure on the glass and drill time is faster.
My packing is awesome, new box (25" X 6" X 6"). I use new bubble wrap and the latest rice based peanuts. Have not had a single glass broken yet, over 100 shipped.
Yeah Mark and others are correct thanks Mark, after all is spent I'm making about $12 bucks per dial glass before my time. I needed one new glass, took a chance and wow, so many audiophile friends wanted glass for Pioneers. I think the best advice I can give is if you ship a Pioneer, remove the tuning knob before shipping, it's solid aluminum and a small bump in shipping will break the glass. Meant to say earlier that of the 5 glass made, I put the other cut and drilled glass on eBay and it sold within a hour. I figured at that time I'm not alone. I can do this, yes I want to make a few bucks at the same time make these stereo's missing one part look good again while they sing. I remember seeing Pioneer, Sansui Marantz etc in Musicland, Audio King and a fire sale company called Banks as a kid. I was drooling, loved this awesome audio gear that cost as much as a 2year old car. You all be well, Rick
 
One old post has the dimensions of a SX-1250 dial glass off by a bunch on the width, Ths364 stated 18 1/4 inch long (wrong) 19 3/8's long, 2 5/8's tall is correct. It's a old post. Also the hole for the tuning shaft is not centered in the vertical 2 5/8 dimension. I have all the exact dimensions listed on my eBay listing, and yes with a large hole installation of the glass is very forgiving and easy. You can use a high quality double back 1/8" wide narrow thickness tape from 3M to install or a thin bead of Gorilla glue, Elmers , can't remember the exact name of Elmer's but it's not white school glue.
 
A important caution, peice of information I wish to share. When shipping a Pioneer SX receiver with a solid billet aluminun tuning knob, remove the knob before shipping!!!!!! Place it somewhere else in the packaging. If the box gets jared in shipping the glass will break most of the time!
