TPA 3116 vs the tripaths

Curious too, different shipping/custom departments opened package 3 times already order tracking tells me, bought 1 almost 3 weeks ago, is in Bejing now.

Powersupply decoupling is changed here, gone are the 2 1nF's all other copied from TI, they added 1 10nF for decoupling. (same designer offers 3118 version were heatsink isn't blocking view)

What is probably biggest difference is they removed all parts after the LC outputfilter, the 1nF's to ground and the 10nF's plus resistor to ground. These are there on other designs to lead large peaks in high frequencies to ground, instead of speakers. Question when do these peaks occur, how often and :) do your speakers need this protection :D

The way I did my dual mono mods for the red board, I effectively removed all effects of the filtering after the LC output filter and notice no side effects. It's EMI filtering, my speakers don't care much.

Could be I not normally follow tracking information that much, but the display wires circuitry board seems to be opened every post office, department, could look suspicious on xray??? 3 times opened, 3 weeks, only in Beijing China. I bet customs here finds it interesting too, so that will be at least another month :)

Can I make this 2.1 into mono,I want to use it as a sub woofer amp,I know how to do it in 2 channel but my I cant figure out how it would go in 3 channel with the one channel already in BTL,this is the first one I bought and never liked the sound so I figured if I can get enough power from it maybe I can use it on my TDA7492 project,Any one know if this is possible,oh and the sub is 2 ohm 2 10"

well count me in on the opinion that the green board sounds better than the blue/black modded...though it doesn't play as loud ...I have to turn up the pre-amp quite a bit louder.I'll play ita few days and see how it settles in.I'm finding the voices more natural and less strained on the green board..the blue/ black I noticed some graininess in male voices sometimes.

eplates, which green board are you referring to?

Thanks for the input. Now I'd like to here what anyone who has the green board thinks relative to the original red board posted on this thread.

Ok I know how to do the 2.0 Mono mode,I need to know how to do it for the 2.1 board,I will take a go at it and say Connect OUTPR OUTNR and SWP together for the positive speaker terminal and OUTNL OUTPL and SWN together for
the negative terminal
Will this work to bridge all 4 chips?Help me I need to at least get a yes this will work or please tell me.

The TPA31xxD2 family can be connected in MONO mode enabling up to 100W output power. This is done by:
• Connect INPL and INNL directly to Ground (without capacitors) this sets the device in Mono mode during
power up.
• Connect OUTPR and OUTNR together for the positive speaker terminal and OUTNL and OUTPL together for
the negative terminal
• Analog input signal is applied to INPR and INNR

Got one.

Well, I finally finished my blue/black board. Was going to put it in this awesome cigar box I got but the walls were too thick so I ended up with a plastic project box.

I must say I am shocked by it's performance. I used to think amps were all the same but this one is clearly different than the SMSL TA2021 Tripath I was using in the same system. Frankly, the SMSL sucks compared to this TPA3116.

The sound stage is bigger and there is a greater sense of presence in the room, like the performers are actually there. The speakers seem to just disappear and vocals come alive. Wow. :music:

I'd say I was crazy or it was placebo because I built something, but my wife who is not into this stuff at all commented on how much better things sounded. She never says this even when I ask her to demo speakers with me. She usually says they all sound the same. So something's here.:scratch2:

Very cool!

Ok well I guess I got it right cause it is pushing the 2 ohm sub hard no heat of any kind.wish I had some kind of meter or something to measure and see if I am getting 200 watts or not,it seems like it has some punch,is there a meter that does that and relatively cheap?

I'm really surprised by the humble red board. Do ppl find a tubed pre a necessary upgrade?

I don't, love the sound "as is" going source-direct. Currently have mine paired with an Onkyo SACD player and Infinity RS-225 speakers in the dining room. Working on a blue board build that I will either use an Alps pot with for volume control, or leave the amp direct and use a passive pre between source and amp. I may try the passive first just to see how that goes.

One day I plan to try one of the little tube pre's, but I haven't felt the need yet,
