TPA 3116 vs the tripaths

My question though is a simple one. Can anyone supply a link or at least tell me which finished, complete TPA3116 amp is the best buy for those of us with no desire to build one? Just like with T-amps there are so many amps and boards available, with seemingly minor differences, I'm not sure which one is the best.

I recently purchased a SMSL SA-36A Pro (mind that suffix: the plain-jane SMSL SA-36A contains a Tripath TA2020 chip), which does not use the TPA3116D2 chip; it does however, use its little brother the TPA3118D2. The only appreciable difference—far as I can tell—between these chips is that the 3116 is rated at 50 Watts per channel, and the 3118 is rated at 30Wpc.

First off, I haven’t received the amp due to slow shipping from China, so grains of salt are recommended, but here are my thoughts. It was $36 (on eBay, shipped) without a power supply, and comes in a very nice-looking case as far as these little chip amps go. They are $50 with a 12V power supply, a few more dollars for a 24V supply, and come in silver, black, or gold. (e.g., http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00L7D0LDK/) I have a spare 24V SMPS from a Dayton DTA-100a T-amp that I exchanged due to a bad volume pot, so I saved myself some change and got just the amp.

Now—I think the DTA-100a is a pretty nice-sounding amp. It’s marketed as a 50Wpc amp, but is more realistically a 30Wpc amp because its THD past 30W gets pretty large. I rarely run past 11 o’clock on the volume with my 86 dB/W/m nearfield speakers, and run at even less with my other speakers (89 dB/W/m). These speakers are “pretty inefficient” and “not very efficient,” respectively, and I’m not using a good two-twirds of the pot’s sweep. Which likely isn’t ideal because the cheap pots on these things tend to have greater channel imbalances as they approach maximum resistance.

I just don’t usually listen really loud. Maybe you do, and maybe there are noticeable sonic differences between the TPA3116 and TPA3118, but I really highly doubt it. I think the TPA3118 got more attention because it’s the heaviest hitter of the TPA31xxD2 series and people happened to notice the cheap boards and well, just look how much discussion there is in this thread alone.

It does kind of baffle me that there aren’t more options for finished 3118 amps, and I briefly considered picking up that offering someone mentioned a few posts back for $115 (plus shipping) with the built-in power supply. But it just didn’t seem to warrant the outlay to me ... think I paid something like $90 for my Dayton T-amp, and I’ll bet there’s a pretty decent markup embedded in some of these finished chip amps.

Now, barring any serious defects, $36 is a price I’m willing to lay down to try a new technology, especially wrapped in that aluminum housing. If the thing turns out to be garbage, I’ll be disappointed, but ... $36.

Anyone here with experience on the SMSL 36-A Pro, or the 3118 chip in general? I’ll admit to getting bored somewhere nearing the halfway mark of this thread....
 
Listening to the 3110 tonight, still in "naked" format, with a Art DJ pre between it and the turntable. Playing a little Keith Jarrett on ECM, Flying. Pretty nice. With the gain on the Art set down low gain, there's no need for an additional preamp. Defintely better sound than running my old HK330B as the phono pre. Some of those transistors in the 330 are getting pretty old, alas.

Found some nice SMALL wood cigar boxes on Sunday, one of those will fit the 3110 board very nicely. Hope to work on that this weekend.

I guess I will keep running off of power bricks for now. The Astron seems like a bit of overkill for my setups...

This seems like a smart thing to do, and I bet the 3118 sounds very good too, given how good the 3110 sounds versus the 3116. I've been amazed at the low number of finished options out there for the 3110, 3116 and 3118 given all of the DIY chatter on this over the past 9 months. I kind of went down the rabbit hole because I thought the amp-making would be fun, and it has been (apart from some hole-measuring challenges). I have some SMSL SA-50 amps, and they are decent and the manufacturing quality is good. I hope that all of the overseas makers jump on these new chips and offer a wider range of finished, ultra-small aluminum case products. They must have a lot of inventory of amps with the old chips? Can't think why else they would be all over it.
 
If I were them I would wait a good amplifier design and then made ​​a box for it. There is a lot of development at DIYAUDIO. They are waiting for things to settle down.
 
The battery powered Bottlehead Quicksand kit amp uses the 3118 chip and sells for $119. I think I recall someone saying the 3118 is older technology?

Anyone who thinks the Dayton DTA100/TK2050 or Topping sounds good should be blown away with the 3116. Night and day IMO.

Audiobah's 3116 + YJ 6N3 combo

Although I was testing Audiobah's board before, modified YJ black was mostly in use in combo with YuanJing 6N3 pre/buffer. Today have decided to put little greenie back in the same combo and instantly have heard difference in sound.
Yes it's definitely better, the whole image is clearer, shiny clear treble and tight bass.
However, I will look forward to play with those boards but not too much, several preamps/buffers I have based on 6N3, 6N4 and 6J1 tubes need more attention and some definitely need caps replacement! Recently got two of those 'Little bears' that look fantastic, hope they sound the same, and also have volume pots of 20K Ohm already fixed that should go a lot better with these 3116 boards.
So while writing this, the postman knocked at the door ... Sure TPA3110 is here :banana: At Sure they do really care about their image and pack boards safely and nicely in the box with quick shipment. The board looks great and pro.!
Now excuse me, toys are waiting to play with a kid :D

I too was really impressed with Sure. I still haven't found the time to play with hooking the 3110 board up, but I'm looking forward to it.
Now if my 6N3 pre would just show up....

TPA3118 is actually the same chip as TPA3116 but has heatsink pad on bottomside. That is a little different on inside layout. If any quality difference would exist it would be very tiny and in favour of TPA3118.

No, but what is it, any good? Probably not as good as TPA331/3110

Anyway, signal caps on that board are little crappy, but for the price what to expect.
Compare with this one for example.
Still don't understand why searching for anything - cheaper but not better than 3116, and you could get nice red YJ board with volume pot off eBay for $9.99 on auction. I picked one last week! Obviously crazy from me, but that chip is simply fantastic, and that is kind of obssesion now :rolleyes:

Thanks, yes there is plenty on the YDA138-E, it seems to be quite good.

I'm in no rush to get a chip amp, but I probably will. I have too many classic amps at present.

Should be pretty safe, don't think I have a hat. Even if it doesn't, but beats my solid state amps, I'll be very happy.

What makes me a bit suspicious of the TPA, and other class D amps, if that differing components are needed for the various impedance speakers, for optimum results.

Yes suspicion is fine but not too much in this case. These boards cost nothing comparing to 'hi-end' gear but could give a lot of surprises and pleasure, especially if one like to build his own little hi-fi device.
Those boards with inductors marked *220* (22uh) are better for 8ohm speakers; Audiobah's green (a bit costly $29) but is great and red YuanJing with potentiometer, prices up to $20, depending of the seller. There are other similar boards but I know these two. All others with inductors marked *100* (10uh) are better with 4 ohm spk. And that's about it. Other components are important but to mess around with those is DIY and modification route, or just 'river of no return'. In that case I would suggest finished - plug&play device. :)
